EU Exports of Goods to India and China in 2000 and 2011

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The four pie charts demonstrates the market share of exports of good to India and China in the year of 2000 and 2011. The goods are being exported from the European countries like Austria, Belgium, Finland, Germany, United Kingdom etc.

In the Indian market, the exports were mainly dominated by three countries: United Kingdom, Belgium, and Germany, with market share of 29%, 25%, and 15%, respectively. All other countries have a market share less than 10%, with France at 8% and Austria at 1%. All the above information was for year 2000, but in 2011 the dynamics of market share changed drastically. Germany was at top with 25%, followed by Belgium and United Kingdom both having market shares of 20% and 13%, respectively. For other European countries the dynamics didn't change much.

Meanwhile for China it's a very different story, Germany had the largest market share with 38% in 2000's and it increased by whopping 10% in 2011, making the total market share to 48%. For other countries the changes weren't no drastic except for Finland and France as both lost 4% and 3% market share, respectively.

In conclusion, between China and India, India had a very major change in its chart while China didn't.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have successfully identified the main features of the data and provided relevant comparisons between the two years and the two markets. You highlighted key shifts, such as Germany's dominance in the Chinese market and the changing hierarchy in the Indian market. However, the response could be improved by providing a more comprehensive overview of the data. For instance, the conclusion is somewhat simplistic and does not fully synthesize the trends observed. Additionally, ensure that all data points mentioned are accurate; for example, you noted Germany's share in China increased by 10% to 48%, which is a good analytical observation. Overall, you have covered the requirements well, but a more detailed summary of the trends would elevate the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is logically organized, with clear paragraphing that separates the analysis of the Indian market from the Chinese market. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Meanwhile' and 'In conclusion', to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition between the description of the Indian market and the Chinese market could be smoother. Furthermore, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the phrase 'all the above information was for year 2000', which could be phrased more naturally. Improving the variety of linking words would help create a more seamless progression of ideas throughout the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'market share', 'dynamics', and 'dominated' appropriately. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'whopping', though this is slightly informal for an academic report. You also have some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'the year of 2000' instead of 'the year 2000' and 'weren't no drastic', which is a double negative. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoiding informal intensifiers. Overall, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly despite these minor inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For instance, 'The four pie charts demonstrates' contains a subject-verb agreement error, and 'weren't no drastic' is grammatically incorrect. Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article usage issues, such as 'at top' instead of 'at the top'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and consistent article usage will help improve your accuracy.
