Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. Furthermore, the content is inaccurate; the student misinterprets the data, referring to 'imports' instead of 'exports' and incorrectly identifying the years (e.g., mentioning 2001 when the charts show 2000 and 2011). The overview is vague and contains factual errors regarding the countries involved. Because the response is underdeveloped and fails to accurately report the main features of the charts, it does not adequately address the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into short paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. While there is an attempt at an overview, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraph is abrupt. Cohesive devices are used in a very limited and sometimes mechanical way, such as 'Furthermore' and 'The first chart'. The referencing is also unclear, as the student confuses the direction of trade and the specific years, which disrupts the flow of information and makes the overall argument difficult to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite basic and repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice, such as using 'ratio' when referring to percentages and 'spikes up' to describe a proportion. The student also confuses 'import' and 'export', which is a critical error in a task about trade data. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the information with precision, and the misuse of terminology hinders the clarity of the report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('Finland has the lowest', 'United Kingdom had the highest') and incorrect capitalization of proper nouns ('china', 'united kingdom'). The sentence structures are simple and lack variety. There are also punctuation errors, such as the missing space after the comma in '2001, While'. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of errors is high, and the lack of complex sentence structures limits the potential for a higher score.
