Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the pie charts, identifying key trends such as the decline in UK exports to India and the growth in German exports to China. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. The overview is slightly confusing, and some data points are described with minor inaccuracies (e.g., stating a 'sharp decline' for the UK when the percentage change is significant but the description could be more precise). While the main trends are highlighted, the comparison between countries is limited, and the report lacks a cohesive summary of the overall shifts in trade patterns. To improve, ensure that all data points are accurately transcribed and that the overview clearly captures the most significant changes across the period.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'To begin' and 'Apart from this'. The logical progression between sentences is sometimes interrupted by grammatical errors, making the flow feel disjointed. Referencing is generally clear, but the transition between the discussion of India and China could be smoother. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider range of linking words more naturally and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, unified focus that connects logically to the next.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher score. There are several instances of word-form errors, such as 'export' used instead of 'exports' or 'exported', and 'miner' instead of 'minor'. Phrases like 'significate percentage' (should be 'significant') and 'slighter change' indicate a limited control over word choice and collocation. While the meaning is generally clear, the repetition of basic structures and the misuse of specific terms limit the range. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise reporting verbs and nouns related to data trends would significantly improve this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that occasionally impede readability. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'united kingdom export more'), incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'goods are export'), and missing articles. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around parentheses. While the meaning is usually understandable, the density of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction, specifically ensuring correct verb tenses and consistent subject-verb agreement, will help improve the accuracy of your writing.
