EU Exports of Goods to India and China in 2000 and 2011

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The four pie charts compare the proportions of goods exported from the European Union to India and China in 2000 and 2011, with exports divided among ten countries.

Overall, Germany and the United Kingdom were the largest exporters to India in 2000, while Germany became the biggest exporter to China in both years. In general, Germany's share of exports increased considerably, whereas the UK's proportion decreased.

In 2000, the UK accounted for the largest proportion of EU exports to India, at 29%, followed by Belgium at 25% and Germany at 15%. France represented 8%, while Italy made up 7%. The remaining countries each contributed relatively small shares, with Austria accounting for only 1%.

By 2011, Germany had become the leading exporter to India, increasing its share from 15% to 25%. In contrast, the UK's proportion fell sharply from 29% to 13%. Belgium also declined, from 25% to 20%, while France rose slightly to 9%. Italy increased to 9%, and the Netherlands rose from 4% to 5%.

For China, Germany was already the largest exporter in 2000, at 38%, and its share increased further to 48% in 2011. France also rose from 13% to 10%—actually, this was a decrease, while Belgium fell from 5% to 5% and Finland decreased from 6% to 2%. The UK's share dropped from 9% to 7%, whereas Austria remained unchanged at 2%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all parts of the task well. You have successfully identified the main features and provided relevant comparisons between the two years and the two destinations. The overview is clear and highlights the most significant trends, such as Germany's growth and the UK's decline. However, there is a minor factual error in the final paragraph where you state 'France also rose from 13% to 10%—actually, this was a decrease'. Including self-correction within the text is not ideal for an academic report; it is better to present the data accurately the first time. Overall, the data is well-selected and supports the summary effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by destination. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'whereas', and 'while' are used effectively to link ideas and contrast data points. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the analysis of India from that of China. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the reader can easily follow the comparison of the different countries over the two time periods. The structure is coherent and professional.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information with precision. Phrases like 'accounted for the largest proportion', 'fell sharply', and 'remained unchanged' are appropriate for a data-driven task. There is some repetition of the word 'proportion' and 'share', but this is expected given the nature of the task. The vocabulary is accurate and fits the academic register required for IELTS Task 1. No significant errors in word choice or collocation were noted that would impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You effectively use subordinate clauses to compare data, such as 'while Germany became the biggest exporter to China in both years'. Grammar is generally accurate, with correct use of tenses to describe past data. Punctuation is handled well, and there are very few errors. The sentence structure is varied, which helps maintain the flow of the report. The minor slip in the final paragraph regarding the French data does not detract significantly from the overall grammatical control.
