EU Exports of Goods to India and China in 2000 and 2011

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart shows exports of European goods to India and China in the year 2000 and 2011. It creates a comparison of exports sold from each European country between these two years.

lets begin with the year 2000, we can see that the demand of exports to India was high in United Kingdom and Belgium with numerical value 29% and 25% followed by a 15% demand in Germany. The demand of exports was still high in countries like France with 8% and Italy with 7%.However on the other hand demand was significantly lower in other European countries like Sweden, Spain, Finland, Austria and other.

On the contrary EU exports of goods to China in 2000 is mainly dominated by Germany at 38%, followed by France with 13% and then we can notice a consistent decline in exports to remaining European countries such UK and Italy, both at 9%, Sweden with 8%. From the chart we can see remaining European countries export to china was less significant.

Now let's move on to a comparison of EU exports to India and China collectively in 2011. We can see that in both countries EU exports is mainly utilized in Germany with 25% from India and 48% from China. the remaining countries such as Sweden, spain, Austria and Netherlands use the same amount of EU exports from both countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the data, but the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you identify key countries like Germany and the UK, the comparison between 2000 and 2011 is not fully developed. Specifically, the final paragraph attempts to compare the two years but fails to clearly articulate the shift in export shares, instead making vague statements about 'utilization'. To reach a higher band, ensure you highlight the most significant changes (e.g., Germany's massive growth in exports to China) rather than listing percentages for every country, which can lead to a 'data dump' style that lacks analytical depth.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive (e.g., 'the demand of exports was...'). The transition between the 2000 data and the 2011 data is abrupt, and the final paragraph lacks a clear concluding summary of the trends. Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as when you mention 'remaining European countries' without specifying which ones are included in the 'other' category from the charts. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'dominated', 'consistent decline', and 'significantly lower'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'numerical value 29%' (which is redundant) and 'EU exports is mainly utilized' (exports are sent or destined for, not utilized by). There are also minor errors in capitalization, such as 'china' and 'spain'. To improve, focus on using more precise reporting verbs and avoiding repetitive phrasing like 'demand of exports'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'EU exports is mainly utilized') and punctuation errors (e.g., missing spaces after periods and inconsistent capitalization). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'lets begin with the year 2000', which is too informal for an Academic Task 1 report. Increasing the accuracy of basic grammar and ensuring consistent sentence structure would help elevate your score.
