Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the data, identifying key trends such as the shift in dominance for exports to India and the stability of exports to China. However, the analysis is somewhat inconsistent. For instance, the claim that the UK 'surged to a low of 13%' is contradictory, as 'surged' implies an increase, while the data shows a decrease. Additionally, the final paragraph is vague, referring to 'all of the other country' without specifying which countries are being discussed. While the main trends are identified, the lack of precision in describing the data points and the slight confusion in reporting the figures prevent a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on specific destinations. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the other hand', 'Looking at the details', and 'In contrast', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as the transition into the final paragraph. Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when the writer mentions 'all of the other country' without defining the group. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, but the cohesion could be more fluid and precise.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, with attempts to use descriptive verbs like 'dominated', 'surpassed', and 'experienced'. However, there are several instances of inaccurate word choice and collocation, such as 'exported items' instead of 'exports', 'surged to a low', and 'displayed an increases'. There are also minor spelling errors like 'abd' instead of 'and' and 'germany' (which should be capitalised). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, the errors in word form and collocation limit the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('The pie graphs illustrates', 'all of the other country just saw'), incorrect verb forms ('surged to a low', 'displayed an increases'), and missing articles. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some sentences starting with lowercase letters after a period. While the meaning remains clear despite these errors, the frequency of grammatical slips prevents the response from reaching a higher band. More attention to proofreading for basic agreement and tense consistency is needed.
