Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the data and makes relevant comparisons between the two years. However, the response falls short of the 150-word minimum requirement, which negatively impacts the task achievement score. While the key trends are identified, the analysis is somewhat mechanical, listing percentages rather than synthesizing the information into a more cohesive report. To improve, ensure you meet the word count and focus on grouping data points to highlight significant shifts or patterns rather than simply listing figures for each country.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on India and China respectively. There is a basic attempt at progression; however, the use of cohesive devices is limited and repetitive (e.g., 'In 2000', 'In 2011'). The transition between sentences is often abrupt, and the lack of varied linking words makes the flow feel somewhat disjointed. To reach a higher band, incorporate a wider range of cohesive devices such as 'consequently', 'in contrast', or 'meanwhile' to better connect ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There is a heavy reliance on basic verbs like 'increased', 'decreased', and 'was'. Phrases like 'very big share' and 'big exporter' are simplistic and lack the academic tone required for IELTS Task 1. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'exports goods' instead of 'goods exports'. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated synonyms and collocations related to data trends, such as 'significant growth', 'plummeted', or 'accounted for'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Subject-verb agreement is inconsistent, such as 'The pie charts shows' and 'France and Italy was'. Additionally, there are missing articles and errors in tense usage, such as 'UK share decrease very fast'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to lower the score. Focus on proofreading for basic agreement and ensuring consistent use of past tense when describing data from 2000 and 2011.
