EU Exports of Goods to India and China in 2000 and 2011
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given diagram consisting of pie charts illustrates the export percentages of various goods to India and China during the years 2000 and 2011 by several European countries.
Overall, the UK, Germany, and Belgium took the major chunk of exports to India, whereas China seemed to receive the most from Germany, France, and Italy.
Starting off with India, during 2000, most of the goods it imported were from the UK with a substantial 29%, followed by Belgium at 25% and Germany at 8%; all the other exporters took less than 10% of the pie each. In contrast, in 2011, a major shift steered the imports in favour of Germany with a notable increase, namely from 15% to 25%, against the decrease of imports from the UK.
China received the majority of its goods from Germany with a remarkable 48%, followed by France at 13%, and then Italy and the UK at 9%. The trend of exports remained quite similar in 2011 as well, with Germany further solidifying its position, going from 38% to 48%, and subsequently France, the United Kingdom, and Italy losing their points.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by summarizing the main features of the pie charts and making relevant comparisons between the years 2000 and 2011. You provide a clear overview in the second paragraph mentioning the dominant exporters for both India and China. For India, you accurately highlight key figures such as the UK in 2000 (29%) and Germany's growth by 2011 (reaching 25%). For China, you correctly identify Germany's dominant share at 48% in both years alongside other contributing nations. While there are a few minor numerical inaccuracies regarding some of the specific historical chart percentages (for instance, stating Germany went from 38% to 48% in China when the charts show 37% to 48%), the overall reporting of main trends and comparisons is well-developed, satisfying the requirements for Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
Your response demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. The essay is appropriately paragraphed, beginning with an introduction, followed by a general overview, and then dedicated body paragraphs for India and China respectively. You use cohesive phrases effectively to transition between ideas and time periods, such as 'Starting off with India', 'In contrast, in 2011', and 'The trend of exports remained quite similar in 2011 as well'. Reference and substitution are generally managed well, ensuring the reader can easily follow the flow of information. The organization supports the communication of data smoothly, earning a solid Band 7.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You use a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision to describe statistical data. Phrases such as 'substantial 29%', 'major shift steered the imports', and 'further solidifying its position' demonstrate an awareness of style and collocation suitable for Academic Task 1. There are occasional slight awkwardness or minor lexical inaccuracies, such as saying countries were 'losing their points' instead of losing percentage points or share, but these do not impede communication. Overall, the lexical range is adequate for a Band 6.5, providing enough variety to discuss the charts clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating participial phrases and relative clauses effectively (e.g., 'consisting of pie charts', 'followed by Belgium at 25% and Germany at 8%'). There is good control of grammar and punctuation, and the majority of your complex structures are constructed accurately. While there are a few minor slips or slightly heavy phrasing, such as 'against the decrease of imports from the UK', these errors do not impede communication and appear only occasionally. This demonstrates the control characteristic of Band 7.0.
