EU Exports of Goods to India and China in 2000 and 2011

EU Exports of Goods to India and China in 2000 and 2011

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The provided circular representations demonstrate the import value of India and China from distinct EU nations between 2000 and 2011.

To begin with India, in 2000, the UK exported the maximum portion of export goods, accounting for 29% which was followed by Belgium at 25%. While the former figure remained almost half, a mere drop of only 5% was witnessed in the latter figure after 11 years. Conversely, the export value of Germany increased from 15% to 25% and it overtook the position of the United Kingdom in 2011. Furthermore, the percentage of goods' exports from Austria, Sweden, Spain, Netherlands and Finland was not more than 5% in either year. Eventually, Italy, France and Other countries exported 5-10% of goods in both years.

In the case of China, Germany was the biggest exporter of all times with the export value of 38% in 2000 and 48% in 2011. Interestingly, likewise India, China imported little amount of goods from Spain, Netherlands, Austria and Finland which was hardly makes the 15% of total exports even if combined together. However, Belgium, France, Italy, the UK and other EU regions contributed to the chinese exports with approximately 5%, 10-13%, 9% and 4-8%, respectively during both years.

Overall, China imported as much as of their goods from Germany during all 11 years, and it also became the largest exporter of India after replacing the UK. Surprisingly, the small countries like Sweden, Spain, Finland, Netherlands and Austria did not contribute much in the terms of both countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the pie charts and making relevant comparisons between 2000 and 2011 for both India and China. Key trends are accurately highlighted, such as Germany overtaking the UK as the largest exporter to India and its dominant position in China. The data points cited, such as the UK dropping from 29% to 13% for India and Germany rising to 48% for China, are precise and grounded in the visual data. An overview is present in the concluding paragraph, effectively summarising the main developments. The response meets all requirements for a Band 7 level in Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. It is divided into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, separate body paragraphs for India and China, and a concluding overview. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to guide the reader through the data, such as 'To begin with India', 'Conversely', and 'In the case of China'. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel slightly mechanical or formulaic, which keeps the score at Band 7. Paragraphing is used appropriately and supports the overall readability of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, employing terms like 'maximum portion', 'overtook the position', and 'biggest exporter'. There are occasional awkward word choices or collocations, such as 'import value of India and China' (when referring to EU exports) and 'little amount of goods', as well as a slight slip with 'chinese exports' (uncapitalised). Nevertheless, less common items are attempted with adequate control, allowing the response to comfortably achieve a Band 6.5 or 7.0 range. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms effectively, incorporating relative clauses and conditional-like phrasing (e.g., 'which was followed by Belgium at 25%', 'even if combined together'). There are a few grammatical inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as 'hardly makes the 15% of total exports' and 'in the terms of both countries', but these errors do not impede communication. The majority of sentences are clear and demonstrate good control of punctuation and tense consistency, fitting the Band 6.5/7.0 descriptors well.
