Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the pie charts comparing EU exports to India and China in 2000 and 2011. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting key leaders such as the UK and Germany. The response appropriately contrasts data between the two years, mentioning specific percentages like Germany's 48% export to China in 2011 and the UK's prominent position in 2000. However, the text cuts off abruptly at the end of the second paragraph with 'respectivel', and the data grouping in the body paragraphs is slightly disjointed. Despite this minor truncation, the core requirements of Task 1 are well met, demonstrating a clear understanding of the visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Firstly', 'While', and 'Furthermore' are employed to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction/overview from the body details. However, referencing and progression occasionally feel mechanical, and the abrupt ending ('respectivel') disrupts the flow of the text. Furthermore, the transition between discussing India and China within the body paragraphs lacks seamless integration, leading to a minor flaw in overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, incorporating terms such as 'delineate', 'calibrated', 'crucial role', and 'proportion'. Less common lexical items are attempted with general success, as seen in expressions like 'maximum products' and 'highest export of goods'. However, there are some minor lexical inaccuracies or awkward word choices, such as 'imported into India' (since the prompt concerns exports from the EU) and 'stock' instead of 'goods' or 'exports'. Spelling is generally accurate, but communication is slightly hindered by the cut-off word at the end of the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases ('In 2000, nearly 54% of stock was imported...'). There is good control over basic grammatical structures, and punctuation is generally handled well. However, there are occasional awkward formulations and minor errors, such as 'which was very less than other countries' exports' (should be 'much lower than') and the incomplete final sentence. Despite these slips, the errors do not impede overall comprehension.
