Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the pie charts regarding EU exports to India and China in 2000 and 2011. Key data points and comparisons are highlighted, such as Germany's dominance in both markets and the significant shift in the United Kingdom's export share to India. However, there are a few minor generalisations and inaccuracies in data interpretation—for instance, stating that European export markets for China remained unchanged overall when several shifts occurred, or misidentifying France as the second biggest exporter to China when Italy held comparable or higher shares in certain years. Despite these minor misinterpretations, the response provides a well-developed overview and covers the main trends effectively, meeting the criteria for a solid Band 6.5 or 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organised into an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs dedicated to India and China respectively, showing a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices are employed to connect sentences, such as "Overall", "in contrast to", and "Whereas". However, there are some minor mechanical issues with cohesion and referencing, and transition sentences occasionally feel slightly formulaic. Furthermore, some minor punctuation and layout spacing issues occur between paragraphs. Overall, the logical flow is clear and enables the reader to follow the comparisons easily, placing it firmly in the Band 6.5 to 7 range.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task 1 response, successfully employing terms like "proportion", "capturing the markets", "gradual increase", and "dramatically decreased". There are, however, several lexical errors and instances of incorrect word forms, such as "precentage" (percentage), "countires" (countries), "somwhat" (somewhat), "manage" (managed), "occuping" (occupying), and inconsistent use of possessive pronouns like "it's" instead of "its". Less common vocabulary is attempted with mixed accuracy. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including comparative structures and dependent clauses (e.g., "while Sweden dropping dramatically" - which contains a grammatical error). There are several grammatical and spelling errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., "Countries like Belgium and Austria kept it's export percentage stable") and punctuation slips. Although these errors are noticeable, the majority of simple sentences are clear, and complex structures are attempted without fully impeding overall communication. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptor.
