EU Exports of Goods to India and China in 2000 and 2011

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Starting with EU exports to India, we see some significant differences in the span of 11 years. The most prominent changes either in the terms of maximization or minimization of the percentages are from United Kingdom and Germany. Other than at all the other countries are like similarly deviated from their mean. United Kingdom had exports of 29% to India in 2000 and it significantly decreased to 13% in 2011. Where as, on the other side, Germany increased its exports from 15% to 25%. Now in the case of china, the major exporter in both years i.e 2000 and 2011 have been germany where as other countries are on nearly the same scale in both the years. The changes are due to unknown reasons but primarily, one can assume their existence to be dependent on political enviroment and culture and of course similar stances on world politics. The European countries that are on the same ratio are most probably neutral to take politics into their country's supply chain.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the task by comparing EU exports to India and China in 2000 and 2011, correctly identifying the United Kingdom and Germany as key countries. However, the response falls short in several areas. Crucially, the final portion of the text introduces irrelevant personal speculation ('The changes are due to unknown reasons but primarily, one can assume their existence to be dependent on political environment'), which violates the core Academic Task 1 requirement to report factual data without personal commentary or speculation. Additionally, the overview is weak, and the data for China is only cursorily mentioned without precise comparative figures. This performance aligns best with Band 5.0 descriptors, as the task is addressed only partially and key features are under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks clear overall progression and suffers from poor paragraphing, being condensed into a single bulky block of text after the opening sentence. Cohesive devices are either misused or absent, resulting in awkward transitions, such as 'Other than at all the other countries are like similarly deviated from their mean' and 'Where as, on the other side'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the logic breaks down completely in the second half where the student wanders off into a discussion of international politics. This places the response firmly in Band 5.0 for Coherence and Cohesion due to the presence of some organisation, but a lack of clear progression and inadequate cohesive devices.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The lexical range is limited and repetitive. The student relies heavily on basic vocabulary and phrases such as 'significant differences', 'prominent changes', and 'major exporter'. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'maximization or minimization of the percentages' and 'similarly deviated from their mean', which do not sound natural in English. Furthermore, 'china' is left uncapitalised. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey basic concepts about the charts, errors in word choice and the inclusion of inappropriate conversational filler ('of course') restrict the score to Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are several grammatical errors, punctuation issues, and awkward syntactic constructions throughout the text. Examples include 'Other than at all the other countries are like similarly deviated from their mean', 'Where as, on the other side', and 'the major exporter in both years i.e 2000 and 2011 have been germany'. Subject-verb agreement errors ('have been germany') and capitalization issues ('china', 'germany') are noticeable. Because the grammatical range is limited and frequent errors cause occasional difficulty for the reader, a band score of 5.0 is appropriate.
