Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the main features of the pie charts comparing EU exports to India and China in 2000 and 2011. The writer correctly identifies that the UK was the top exporter to India in 2000 (29%) and Germany was the top exporter in 2011 (25%) as well as to China in both years (38% and 48%). However, the overview is weak and conversational, lacking a cohesive summary of the broader trends. Furthermore, categorising nearly every other country as 'the least' is inaccurate and overly simplistic, failing to report key data points for countries like Belgium or France adequately. Task Achievement is limited by a lack of analytical depth and poor overview construction.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The text suffers from very poor paragraphing and structural control. Sentences are broken up into numerous one-line paragraphs, creating a choppy and fragmented appearance rather than a well-organised report. Cohesive devices are either missing or repetitive and mechanical, such as the frequent use of 'In the year of 2000' and 'When we compared'. Progression is hindered by conversational filler phrases like 'First of all we can select' and 'Now we can check', which are entirely inappropriate for an Academic Task 1 report. The overall arrangement lacks logical flow and professional cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is highly repetitive and basic. Phrases like 'exports of goods to india is more from', 'all the countries that are given in the pie charts', and 'very good supply of goods' demonstrate a very limited lexical range. There are noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies, such as lowercase country names ('india', 'china', 'germany') and awkward word choices ('observer' instead of 'observe'). The vocabulary is barely adequate to convey the basic message and lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher band scores.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The grammatical range is severely restricted. The student relies heavily on simple, repetitive sentence patterns, and attempts at complex structures are faulty, such as 'When we compared to 2000 and 2011 year some countries... this three countries can exports the goods...'. There are frequent and persistent errors in tense consistency, subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'exports... is more'), prepositions, and punctuation. Capitalisation rules are routinely ignored. These errors cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and reflect weak control over basic English grammar.
