Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses the task by summarising the main features of the pie charts comparing EU exports to India and China in 2000 and 2011. Key data points, such as the UK and Germany's changing dominant positions and the lowest exporting nations, are highlighted and compared effectively. However, there is a minor data misinterpretation: in paragraph two, the student states that Germany became the largest shareholder of EU exports to India in 2011 at 25%, whereas the chart shows the UK was actually the largest in 2000 and Germany overtook it in 2011, but the phrasing is slightly confused regarding the 2000 data for India (where Germany was 15% and the UK 29%). Overall, the main trends are captured well, earning a solid Band 6.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a clear overall progression, dividing information logically between India and China across paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas, such as 'In the 2000', 'In 2011', and 'As for China'. However, referencing and transitions are sometimes mechanical, and paragraphing could be structured more cleanly to separate the two countries more distinctly. Additionally, some mechanical errors occur with transitional phrases, such as missing articles ('In the 2000'). Cohesion is generally effective, meeting the criteria for Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range suitable for describing statistical data, employing terms like 'shareholder' (though 'share' or 'proportion' is more accurate for countries), 'exports', and 'accounting for'. Less common lexical items are attempted, such as 'span of 11 years'. However, there are some repetitive phrases ('largest shareholder') and word choice inaccuracies. Spelling is generally good, but minor lexical infelicities prevent the score from reaching a higher band. This performance aligns comfortably with Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and participial phrases (e.g., 'having reduced from 25%'). However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips, such as missing articles ('In the 2000'), subject-verb agreement issues ('Finland and Austria holds'), and missing spaces after punctuation marks ('China,Germany'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score, making Band 6.0 an accurate reflection of grammatical control.
