Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially, presenting some key features while missing others and containing inaccuracies in the data reported. While the student attempts to provide an overview and mention several countries, some ideas are limited and under-developed. For instance, the claim that the transportation of goods from Belgium to China and Finland to India remained constant is incorrect based on the visual data, where Belgium's export share to China was 5% in both years, but Finland's share to India was actually 2% in both 2000 and 2011, though other countries experienced more significant shifts. Furthermore, the description of specific percentages is occasionally imprecise or confusing, such as mentioning 'amount of transportation of equipments was 1 percent only'. To achieve a higher band, the response needs to select and accurately report the most salient trends and comparisons without relying on faulty data interpretation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation in the response, but it lacks a clear overall progression. The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical flow between sentences is hindered by mechanical and repetitive cohesive devices, as well as unclear referencing. For example, starting multiple sentences with 'The' followed by a country name ('The Austria had the lowest ratio', 'The Belgium decreased') creates a disjointed reading experience. Paragraphing is attempted to separate the general trends from specific country details, but the internal structure of these paragraphs remains somewhat erratic. To improve, the student should focus on creating a smoother logical progression of ideas using a wider and more accurate variety of cohesive links, and ensure that referencing pronouns and transitional phrases clearly guide the reader through the data comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts to use some less common vocabulary, such as 'ratio', 'exportation', and 'transportation', but these are often used with noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and form. For instance, writing 'transport of goods from EU countries' and 'transportation of equipments' shows awkward phrasing where terms like 'exports' or 'goods' would be more appropriate. Additionally, there are awkward word choices such as 'expanded range of transportation of material' instead of referring to export shares or percentages. To reach a higher band, the student should expand their range of vocabulary related to data trends and ensure that words are chosen and collated correctly to convey meaning precisely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response uses a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside attempts at complex forms that are often faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar, including missing or incorrect articles ('The 4 pie charts illustrated', 'The Austria had', 'in india'), incorrect prepositions ('transport of goods from EU countries to India and China in the year of 2000'), and faulty subject-verb agreement or tense consistency ('The highest ratio of export of goods had seen in Germany'). These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student needs to practice forming complex sentences with greater grammatical accuracy, pay closer attention to articles and prepositions, and maintain consistent control over verb tenses when reporting static and comparative data from charts.
