Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting on the pie charts, though some areas are more fully covered than others. A clear overview is provided, highlighting the shifting dominance of the United Kingdom and Germany in exports to India and China. However, some ideas and data points are under-developed or inaccurately cited. For instance, the discussion of the year 2011 for China references figures incorrectly; the text states that Germany recorded 38% in 2011, whereas the visual data shows that figure was actually for 2000, and Germany rose to 48% in 2011. Similarly, the summary of remaining countries contains minor inaccuracies. To reach a higher level, the response needs to ensure greater precision and consistency when selecting and reporting numerical data across all time periods.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical division into paragraphs, featuring a clear introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for the charts. Information is sequenced logically, starting with India and moving to China. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, the transition between paragraphs relies on basic time markers, and the phrase 'while other countries exported roughly a third of total goods in China in 2011' groups categories loosely without clear progression. To achieve a higher score, the response should employ a wider range of cohesive devices more smoothly and maintain clearer internal referencing throughout the comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'exports', 'share', 'proportion', and 'contributed'. There are commendable attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'occupying the largest share' and 'steady increase'. However, some word-choice and factual collocation errors occur, such as writing 'while Germany replaces the highest proportion' instead of 'replaces' as 'replaces' is used incorrectly here for temporal progression, or confusing data timelines as noted in task achievement. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication. Expanding the variety of precise reporting verbs and adjectives would elevate the lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as introductory subordinate clauses ('In 2000, United Kingdom exported around...') and relative participial phrases ('occupying the largest share'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly with tense consistency ('while Germany replaces the highest proportion in 2011' instead of replaced) and missing articles (e.g., omitting 'the' before 'United Kingdom'). Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the intended comparisons easily. Incorporating a wider variety of fully error-free complex structures would help push this criterion higher.
