Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main parts of the task by presenting data for both years and destinations, though some features are under-developed or inaccurately described. You successfully identify major trends, such as Germany becoming the leading exporter to India in 2011 and its dominant position in China. However, several specific details contain minor inaccuracies or lack sufficient extension. For example, stating that Belgium exported the exact same amount in both years to China is imprecise since Belgium remained constant at 5%, but other minor shifts in countries like France and Italy were omitted. The overview is also quite brief and embedded at the end of the second body paragraph rather than presented clearly. To reach a higher band, you need to ensure all key comparisons are fully supported with precise data and present a clear, distinct overview highlighting the overall global trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, dividing the information logically between India and China. You make use of basic cohesive devices such as 'Whereas', 'Also', and 'For China', which help guide the reader through the data. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally be mechanical or slightly awkward, such as starting multiple sentences abruptly or using repetitive structures like 'There was a significant decrease... There was not much change...'. To progress further, aim for smoother transitions between sentences and vary your cohesive devices to create a more natural and seamless progression of ideas throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use an adequate vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common terms such as 'significant drop', 'exporter', and 'contribution'. However, there are notable lexical inaccuracies, word choice issues, and spelling errors that occasionally detract from the quality of your writing, such as 'contrinutes', 'contibution', 'contries', and 'oth'. Furthermore, some phrases lack natural collocation or precision, such as 'largest percent exports were done by' instead of 'the largest percentage of exports came from'. To improve your lexical score, focus on eliminating spelling mistakes, widening your range of vocabulary for describing statistical data, and ensuring that words are used in precise collocations appropriate for academic writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response shows a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use relative clauses and compound sentences. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in punctuation, capitalization, article usage, and subject-verb agreement. Examples include missing articles ('united kingdom'), unnecessary capitalisation and spacing issues (e.g., spaces before commas, 'to india', 'Eu contries'), and tense inconsistencies or awkward verb forms like 'the exports by belgium was decreased'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur regularly enough to restrict your score. To achieve a higher band, you need to exercise greater control over basic grammatical structures, ensure correct punctuation spacing, and maintain consistent accuracy in verb tenses and agreements.
