Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the task only partially, as it focuses exclusively on the charts for India while completely omitting the data for China. The official descriptors for this band note that the response presents a limited selection of features and tends to cover the task only partially. While an overview is attempted, it only covers parts of the visual data. To reach a higher level, the writer must ensure that all parts of the prompt are covered, which in this case means reporting and comparing key trends and figures from both the India and China pie charts rather than ignoring half of the visual information provided.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some basic organization with an attempt at paragraphing, but the overall progression of ideas is limited and mechanical. The writer uses basic sequencing words such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'Lastly', but cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or repetitive. For example, transitioning between sentences often feels abrupt. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as when referring back to figures and timescales without fully anchoring the comparisons. To improve, the writer should work on creating a smoother logical flow between sentences and paragraphs, ensuring that cohesive devices are used more flexibly and naturally to connect related points of data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, but it contains noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, alongside capitalization and spelling slips. For instance, the student writes 'Eu countries to india' instead of properly capitalizing proper nouns, and uses phrases like 'pointed 29% of value' or 'sent lowest quantity', which sound unnatural. Less common lexical items are attempted, such as 'minute increment', but they are often deployed with slight inaccuracies. To move up to the next band, the student needs to expand their range of vocabulary for describing statistical data and focus on precise word choices and correct collocations when discussing percentages and proportions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple or awkwardly constructed complex forms. Frequent errors are present, particularly with verb tenses, voice, and prepositions within grammatical patterns, such as 'it was declined by more than half' (where the passive voice is misused for an intransitive verb) and 'the score was in 15%'. Punctuation and article use also show lapses, such as missing articles before singular nouns. While these errors rarely completely obscure the message, they occur frequently and cause difficulty for the reader. Incorporating a wider mix of accurate complex structures with better control over verb forms and prepositions is necessary for improvement.
