Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task partially, as there are notable inaccuracies and confusions in reporting the data. For instance, the student states that the United States exported 29% to India in 2000, whereas the chart clearly attributes this figure to the United Kingdom. Similarly, Germany is incorrectly credited as having the maximum proportion across all charts in the overview when Belgium actually held the highest share for India in 2000. While an overview is attempted and some main features such as Germany's dominant share in China are identified, the selection of data is inconsistent and contains factual errors regarding country names and percentages. To reach a higher level, the response must accurately report the data directly from the visual source and avoid misidentifying key nations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, separating the introduction, overview, and body paragraphs detailing the two years. Information is generally grouped by year, which provides a logical structure. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, seen in repetitive transitions such as 'In 2000,' and 'In 2011,' alongside awkward linking phrases like 'However with 38% Germany holds...'. Referencing can also be unclear, as pronouns and connecting phrases occasionally disrupt the flow of comparisons. To improve, the writer should employ a wider and more natural variety of cohesive devices and ensure smoother transitions between sentences and data points.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, providing basic terms related to charts and proportions, such as 'proportion', 'exports', 'highest position', and 'lowest account'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and inappropriate word choices, such as 'country Germany', 'Netherlands had 5% holdings', and 'Austria and Finland had the lowest account'. Furthermore, spelling and word form errors, such as lowercase 'china' and 'china' instead of China, detract from the quality. The range of vocabulary remains limited and relies heavily on repeating simple descriptors like 'proportion' and 'countries'. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to incorporate more precise, less common vocabulary and demonstrate better control over collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response exhibits a limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside some attempts at complex forms that are frequently faulty. There are several grammar and punctuation errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('Goods to China from France had a proportion of 13% where as UK and Italy had the similar share', 'Belgium and Germany exported goods to India holds 2nd and 3rd position'), missing articles ('to china'), and awkward clause structures. Punctuation errors, such as missing commas after introductory time markers, also occur. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and show a lack of firm control over complex sentence patterns.
