Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview of the main trends and comparing the EU exports to India and China in 2000 and 2011. Key features are selected and reported, such as Germany's dominance in exports to China and the prominent positions of the UK and Belgium regarding India. However, some aspects of the response are slightly under-developed; for instance, the conclusion regarding 'other' countries being 'flactuated' is vague and contains inaccurate data interpretation. To reach a higher band, the student should ensure all selected data points are reported with greater accuracy and that comparisons are more fully supported with precise figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and an overall statement. Information is generally ordered logically, moving from an introduction to specific details about India and then China. Cohesive devices are used to signal shifts between ideas, such as 'However by contrast' and 'In 2000'. Nevertheless, cohesion sometimes feels mechanical or repetitive, and referencing is occasionally faulty, such as the unclear pronoun reference in 'there portion changed'. Paragraphing is attempted, though formatting could be tighter. To improve further, the writer should employ a wider and more seamless variety of transitional phrases and ensure clearer logical links between sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate main ideas about economic exports and percentages. There are appropriate attempts to use less common vocabulary such as 'contributor', 'proportion', and 'exporter'. However, the vocabulary range remains somewhat limited, and there are noticeable word-choice and spelling errors that affect precision, such as 'accouts' instead of 'accounts', 'share's' instead of 'shares', and 'flactuated' instead of 'fluctuated'. Additionally, collocation could be improved in phrases like 'goods transport'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher lexical band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and comparative transitions. There are, however, several grammatical and punctuation errors present throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues like 'main exporter of goods ... were', missing articles such as 'in United kingdom', and prepositional errors in 'decreased upto'. Punctuation is also slightly inconsistent around introductory clauses and lists. While these errors rarely impede communication and the basic meaning remains clear, the frequency of structural and mechanical slips restricts the score to this band.
