Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main task requirements by attempting to summarise the pie charts showing EU exports to India and China in 2000 and 2011, providing some key comparisons. However, the evaluation sits at this level because some details are limited, under-developed, or imprecise. For example, the overview contains a confusing statement claiming that the highest number of exported items were from 'the Germany to China' while mentioning minimum exports to India incorrectly. Furthermore, some data points are inaccurate or poorly integrated, such as stating that Germany's ratio to India was 25% in 2011 (which is correct), but the overall selection and reporting of features lacks consistent clarity and extension. To move to a higher band, the overview needs to accurately capture the broader trends without factual confusion, and key data comparisons should be fully articulated and supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, dividing the introduction, overview, and body paragraphs logically. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in abrupt transitions like 'Probing ahead in 2011' and 'To begin with'. Paragraph breaks are present, but the logical progression within paragraphs stumbles due to awkward sentence phrasing and isolated points, such as the sudden shift regarding Austria and Finland's overseas sales. To achieve a higher level of coherence and cohesion, the writer should use smoother, more natural cohesive devices to link sentences and ensure that the progression of ideas from one year to the next flows logically without disjointed leaps.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to discuss percentages, proportions, and export destinations. However, lexical control is limited, featuring frequent word-choice errors, incorrect word forms, and collocation slips. Examples include 'transport of different goods' instead of exports, 'the Germany' instead of Germany, 'Wheras', 'Austria transport of goods were minimum', and 'Germany transport the goods'. The writer attempts less common vocabulary such as 'proportion', 'overseas sales', and 'ratio', but these are often used inaccurately. To improve, the student needs to expand their control of word forms (e.g., noun vs. verb forms like export vs. exports) and refine collocations to communicate meaning more precisely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing shows a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside frequent faulty attempts at complex ones. There are frequent grammatical errors involving subject-verb agreement, articles, and tense usage that can cause difficulty for the reader. Notable errors include 'The given pie charts illustrates' (singular/plural mismatch), 'Germany transport the goods around 38%' (incorrect tense and verb form), 'the Germany ratio of items at 25% to India which is highest' (missing main verb clause), and 'Finland , Sweeden and Spain was exports' (subject-verb agreement and word form errors). To reach a higher band, the writer must increase the proportion of error-free sentences and gain better control over basic sentence architecture, verb forms, and auxiliary verbs.
