Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview and reporting the key features of EU exports to India and China in 2000 and 2011. The selection of data is generally appropriate, identifying top exporters like the UK and Germany alongside smaller contributors like Austria. However, the development is slightly uneven, which places the response at this level. For instance, while the text provides accurate figures for major trading partners, some details regarding minor contributors or percentage shifts are under-developed. The overview is functional, though it could have been integrated more smoothly. To reach a higher band, the response would need to provide a fully extended comparison of all notable trends without minor omissions or slight generalisation gaps.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the concluding summary. Information is grouped appropriately by destination and year. Cohesive devices such as "whereas", "In the same manner", and "Likewise" are used to connect ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure. Paragraphing is handled well, ensuring each section has a distinct focus. To move further up the scale, the essay would require more sophisticated and flexible referencing, avoiding repetitive sentence openings and ensuring that the flow between sentences is entirely natural and unobtrusive throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as "exports", "exporter", "partner", and percentages. There are clear attempts to use less common vocabulary and precise reporting language, such as "accounted for" and "comprising". However, some minor lexical inaccuracies occur, such as "least contributors" instead of "smallest contributors", and minor prepositional or phrasing choices. Spelling and word choice are generally clear enough that communication is never impeded. To achieve a higher band, the vocabulary would need to demonstrate greater flexibility and precision, with more natural collocations and fewer minor lexical slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over past tense reporting for the historical data. There are several error-free sentences, particularly when describing single data points. However, some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing persist, such as missing articles ("from EU" instead of "from the EU", "United kingdom" needing a capital 'K'), minor punctuation slips (a missing space after a full stop), and awkward phrasing like "In the contrary" instead of "In contrast". These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. To improve, the student should focus on eliminating basic article and preposition errors and increasing the frequency of error-free complex structures.
