EU Exports of Goods to India and China in 2000 and 2011
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The piecharts illustrate the amount of goods exported from EU countries to India and China in the year 2000 and 2011.
Overall, the EU consists of 11 countries amongst which UK was the highest exporter to India in 2000 and was overtaken by Germany in 2011. However, for China, Germany was the major exporter in both years.
In India, in the year 2000, UK made the highest contribution at 29% closely followed by Belgium and Germany at 25% and 15%, respectively. However, in 2011, Germany was leading with 25% and Belgium remained in second place but with lesser contribution of 20%. All the other countries contributed less than 10% in each year.
In contrast, the major exported of China remained the same in both years although the figure for Germany rose substantially from 38% in 2000 to 48% in 2011. All the other countries contributed less than 10% in both years, where the proportion increased for Netherlands, Spain and others but dropped for Italy, Sweden, UK, Finland and France. Austria and Belgium remained steady at 2% and 5% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons between the two years. A clear overview is provided at the beginning, noting key shifts such as the United Kingdom being replaced by Germany as the leading exporter to India. Key data points are accurately selected and supported, such as Germany rising from 38% to 48% for China and the UK dropping from 29% to 13% for India. While there is a slight over-generalisation in stating that all other countries contributed less than 10% in each year (which is mostly accurate with minor exceptions), the overall selection of data is well-judged and fully covers the requirements of the prompt, showing the characteristics expected at this high level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The report exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly, with the introduction followed by a dedicated paragraph on India and another on China, allowing for effective comparisons. Cohesive devices are used flexibly to guide the reader through the data, such as 'In contrast,' 'However,' and 'in both years.' Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, and referencing between sentences is well managed. To move to an even higher band, the student could ensure that every transition feels entirely natural and avoids any slight mechanical phrasing, thereby achieving a completely seamless flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is generally adequate and demonstrates a sufficient range for some flexibility and precision, employing terms like 'exporter,' 'contribution,' 'proportion,' and 'substantially.' Less common items and phrases are attempted with varying degrees of success, such as 'rose substantially' and 'remained steady.' However, there are occasional lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as referring to Germany as 'the major exported of China' instead of 'the major exporter,' and minor phrasing slips. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect the characteristics of a band six baseline while showing elements of flexibility through appropriate data-reporting verbs.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The response displays a good variety of complex sentence structures alongside simple forms, with frequent error-free sentences. Good control is shown over verb tenses used to describe past data, as seen in 'was overtaken,' 'rose substantially,' and 'dropped.' Punctuation and sentence boundaries are handled well. Although a few minor errors persist—such as the missing article in 'in the year 2000 and 2011' or the slight mismatch in 'the major exported of China'—the majority of sentences are grammatically sound and present clear, complex ideas without impeding the reader's comprehension, matching the profile for this level.
