The charts provided show the percentage of goods transported to various countries from China and India. After comparing the charts according to the time periods from the 2000 and 2011 we can tell in which countries were provided more goods. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response attempts to address the task by reporting figures from the charts, but it suffers from significant misinterpretation of the visual data. The student misconstrues the charts, reversing the direction of trade by stating that goods were transported from China and India to various European countries, whereas the charts actually show exports from EU countries to India and China. Furthermore, the selection of data is erratic and fails to provide a clear, accurate overview of the main trends. Key proportions are miscalculated or misreported, such as stating that 52% of goods were transported around Europe in 2011 for China. This places the response in the lower band range, as the information presented is largely inaccurate and fails to meet the core requirements of an objective summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The organisation of the text is somewhat basic and lacks clear overall progression. The response is divided into a short introductory statement followed by two dense blocks of text rather than well-structured paragraphs separating the two destination countries or years effectively. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and repetitively, with transitional phrases like 'meanwhile in the 2011' and 'similarly in China' feeling forced. The referencing between pronouns and their antecedents is frequently confusing, making it difficult to follow which country or category is being referred to. To improve, the student needs to use clearer paragraphing and a wider, more natural variety of linking words to guide the reader logically through the data comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, heavily relying on basic terms such as 'transported', 'goods', and 'countries'. There are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocations, such as 'goods were given to Germany' instead of 'exported' or 'sent', and 'orders' used to describe percentage shares. While the vocabulary is adequate to communicate basic numbers, the lexical range restricts the precision needed for an Academic Task 1 response. Spelling is generally acceptable, but frequent awkward phrasing and misuse of terminology impede smooth reading. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate a wider variety of precise reporting verbs and synonyms for trade data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple and clumsily constructed complex sentences. There are frequent errors in grammar, including missing or incorrect prepositions ('transported in other countries', 'transported to majority'), awkward relative clauses, and poor punctuation which leads to run-on sentences like the final sentence in the response. Articles are also frequently misused or omitted ('in the 2011', 'in China during 2000'). These frequent errors and the lack of complex sentence control cause some difficulty for the reader, keeping the grammar score at this level. Developing better command over clause structures and prepositional use will be crucial for improvement.
