Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify several important features, including the UK’s leading share of exports to India in 2000 (29%) and Germany’s dominance in China (38%), and you provide an overview comparing the two destinations. However, coverage is incomplete and some comparisons are inaccurate or unclear. For example, France was second in China in 2000 at 13%, but the response does not clearly distinguish this from the 2011 figures. The claim that Sweden was the second-lowest exporter to China in 2011 is incorrect: Sweden and Spain were both at 3%, while Austria was at 2%. The overview also omits the major change that Germany’s share of China exports rose to 48% in 2011. Select the most significant changes and report them accurately across both years.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure, with an introduction, an overview and paragraphs containing details, so the reader can identify the topic and some comparisons. However, progression is limited: the first detail paragraph returns to 2000 after the overview, while the final paragraph gives only a brief and incomplete account of 2011. Linking is also repetitive, particularly through repeated use of “Moreover,” “Furthermore” and “while,” and some connections are unclear, as in “Belgium is after Germany.” Organise the details consistently by destination or year, and use clear comparisons to guide the reader from one chart to the next. This would create a more coherent progression rather than a list of separate observations.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the general subject, including “exports,” “biggest exporter” and “largest exporter.” However, the range is limited and several expressions are repetitive or imprecise, such as “on the top of the list,” “on the lowest number” and “second lowest number.” These phrases make comparisons less natural and sometimes obscure the intended ranking. There are also spelling and word-form errors, including “Swedan” and “og,” as well as inconsistent capitalisation of country names. Use more precise chart language such as “accounted for,” “share,” “ranked second” and “smallest proportion,” and check spelling and capitalisation carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You communicate the basic message using simple sentences and some longer structures, but grammatical control is inconsistent. Subject–verb agreement is incorrect in “The pie chart below illustrate,” and articles are misused in “the Austria” and “the United Kingdom is the biggest exporter.” Tense and sentence construction also need attention: “Germany is the highest exporter” is used for figures from 2000, and the final sentence beginning “while, Belgium…” is not punctuated or structured effectively. Several sentences rely on repeated “is” constructions, limiting the range. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and build comparisons with complete clauses, for example, “Germany accounted for 38% of exports to China in 2000, rising to 48% in 2011.”
