Student answer (Band 7.0)

In present era co-education is becoming very common in many cities. Many people still believe that boys and girls should be educated in separate schools. I completely disagree with this notion as they can learn to respect the opposite gender and also can be prepared for the future when they are required to work.

Studying in the same environment will teach both boys and girls to respect each other. This is because, they will become more comfortable while understanding each other's opinions as they can share their views and problems with one another. For instance, the boys who have female friends can easily understand the problem associated with being a girl such as periods, which makes them more respectful towards other girls as well. Hence, being in the surrounding will be helpful for both boys and girls to develop understanding for the opposite gender.

The co-educational institutions also prepare both male and female students for future when they have to work with mixed gender people. To expound, most of the job markets have both male and female employees and the individuals who are graduated from single-sex schools may find it challenging to work around the opposite sex as they may have never experienced it. For example, the boys who have completed their high school from a boarding school often face difficulties having conversations with girls after getting out. Therefore, it is more practical to educate students of all genders in the same schools so that they do not have to face awkwardness in late life.

To conclude, I strongly disagree with this view as in my opinion it is crucial for young boys and girls to be educated in mixed schools so they can be more respectful towards a person despite the sex and be ready for the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding social development and future workplace preparation are relevant and logically extended. The ideas are supported with examples, such as the mention of boarding school experiences and workplace dynamics. While the development is sufficient, it could be further enhanced by exploring potential counter-arguments or providing more nuanced analysis to reach a higher band. Overall, the response is well-focused and directly answers the question, demonstrating a clear understanding of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'For instance', 'To expound', and 'Therefore' are used effectively to link ideas. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more varied to improve the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure supports the development of the argument well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'co-educational institutions' and 'job markets'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances where word choice could be more precise, such as 'in late life' instead of 'later in life' or 'the surrounding' instead of 'a co-educational environment'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the message, it lacks the sophistication and flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is generally good control over grammar, though some minor errors persist, such as 'the individuals who are graduated' (should be 'who have graduated') and 'work with mixed gender people' (should be 'people of mixed genders'). Punctuation is generally accurate, and these errors do not impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on refining complex structures and ensuring consistent verb tense usage throughout the essay.
