IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In many parts of the world girls and boys are educated together in co-educational or mixed schools. Some people think that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools. To what extent do you agree with this view?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience. Write at least 250 words.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
While many countries have adopted co-education in their education system, some people believe that teaching students separately based on their gender difference has its benefits. I completely agree with this statement.
Firstly, there are certainly many advantages when it comes to co-education. Boys and girls can learn how to get on with the opposite gender from an early ege, which is an invaluable interpersonal skill in today's world. For instance, generally speaking, females and males have different characteristics, and students can familiarize themselves with a variety of personalities in mixed schools, enabling them to adapt to the authentic situations later on in the workplace.
In terms of single-sex schools, we need to admit that they do not have features possessed by mixed schools. That, though, does not necessarily indicate that educating students separately does not have its benefits. In Iceland, for example, some educational institutions have already adopted this system, separating students and tailoring curricula based on genders. As a result, boys and girls have more opportunities to showcase their talents freely without being influenced by stereotypes that boys should be good at science and girls should be interested in art. In addition, they do not face the competition form the opposite gender anymore, enabling them to grow up in a relatively relaxing environment compared to the past.
In conclusion, despite the fact that co-education has many benefits and single-sex schools do not have those, it must be admitted that younger generations can gain many advantages from such education, such as holding the stereotypes at bay and a more relaxing environment. Thus, I strongly agree with the opinion that students benefit from being educated separately.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed the prompt by presenting a clear position throughout the essay. You acknowledge the counter-argument regarding co-education before focusing on the benefits of single-sex schools. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat uneven. While you provide a specific example regarding Iceland, the explanation of how single-sex education helps students overcome stereotypes could be more deeply explored to reach a higher band. The conclusion is clear, but ensure that your arguments are fully supported with more detailed reasoning to demonstrate a more sophisticated level of analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'For instance', 'In addition', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader through your argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between the counter-argument in the second paragraph and the main argument in the third could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including terms like 'interpersonal skill', 'authentic situations', and 'tailoring curricula'. There are a few minor errors, such as 'ege' (spelling) and 'competition form' (typo for 'from'). You attempt to use some less common vocabulary, which is good, but to reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise collocations and a wider variety of academic vocabulary to express your ideas with greater nuance and sophistication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'While many countries have adopted... some people believe...' and 'As a result, boys and girls have more opportunities...'. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically accurate. There are occasional slips, such as 'gender difference' (should be 'gender differences') and 'holding the stereotypes at bay' (slightly unnatural phrasing). However, these errors do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures with more consistent accuracy.
