Student answer (Band 7.0)

The debate over whether single-sex or co-educational schooling provides a better learning environment has long been a central topic in educational policy. While single-sex education can offer focused learning environments free from specific social distractions, I largely disagree with the view that boys and girls should be educated separately. Co-educational schools provide essential preparation for real-world collaboration and foster healthy interpersonal skills.

Proponents of single-sex schools argue that separating gender allows for tailored teaching methods and reduces academic performance gaps. For instance, research often suggests that girls in single-sex environments are more likely to pursue STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) without feeling influenced by traditional gender stereotypes. Similarly, boys may benefit from learning environments structured around their developmental pace without pressure to perform socially for female peers.

However, the primary drawback of single-sex education is that it isolates students from the reality of a mixed-gender society. In adulthood, men and women must work alongside each other in professional, civic, and personal settings. Co-educational schools act as a microcosm of modern society, allowing students to normalize daily interactions with the opposite sex. Through group projects, sports, and extracurricular activities, boys and girls learn mutual respect, effective communication, and empathy, which helps break down gender biases and awkwardness early in life.

Furthermore, separating students based on

gender can inadvertently reinforce right now.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response presents a clear position and addresses the prompt effectively by discussing both sides of the argument. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement, which negatively impacts the development of ideas. The final paragraph is incomplete, ending abruptly with 'reinforce right now,' which leaves the argument unfinished and prevents a full exploration of the topic. While the initial points are relevant and well-structured, the failure to complete the essay and meet the length requirement means the task is only partially addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a logical flow of ideas, with clear paragraphing used to separate the introduction, the opposing view, and the writer's own perspective. Cohesive devices such as 'However,' 'For instance,' and 'Furthermore' are used appropriately to link sentences and ideas. The progression of the argument is logical until the final sentence, where the abrupt ending disrupts the coherence of the conclusion. Despite this, the overall structure is sound and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and precise for the topic. Phrases like 'tailored teaching methods,' 'microcosm of modern society,' and 'gender biases' show a good level of sophistication. The range is sufficient to convey complex ideas clearly. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication, although the limited length restricts the opportunity to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Grammatical control is generally strong, with accurate use of punctuation and complex clauses, such as 'While single-sex education can offer focused learning environments... I largely disagree.' There are no major grammatical errors that hinder understanding. The primary issue is the incomplete final sentence, which is a grammatical failure due to the unfinished thought, but the rest of the text is error-free.
