Student answer (Band 6.5)

The question of whether girls and boys benefit more from being educated in co-educational schools or separately in single-sex schools has long been a point of debate among people. While some argue that there are more benefits of co-education other maintain that single-sex school education is more beneficial. Both arguments hold merit. I am inclined to believe that co-educational has more significant impact on the students.

Proponents of the second view contend that there should be gender based schools. They believe that single-sex schools education has more profound impact on students. This belief can be attributed to increase in inappropriate relationships between students at a very young age which has detrimental effect on their studies and mental health.

Conversely, advocates who prioritize co-education assert that it is more conducive for the students. The rationale behind this is to build confidence in the students from early age. The prime example of this could be girls who did early education from single-sex schools face challenges when they start higher education in co-educational institutes. There is difficulty in communication with opposite gender during group projects and assignments etc and it affects their grades. Therefore opponents claim that mixed schools education plays a pivotal role in improving communication skills with opposite gender and better learning.

To conclude, although both perspective are valid but I am of the opinion that we should acknowledge more co-educational schools. Thus, an all-inclusive approach such as teaching students how to interact with opposite sex and counselling centers in schools are best for improving education for students.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention the potential for 'inappropriate relationships' in co-ed schools and 'communication challenges' in single-sex schools, these points are not fully extended with concrete examples or deeper analysis. The conclusion introduces a new idea regarding 'counselling centers' which was not previously discussed in the body paragraphs. To reach a higher band, ensure that each main idea is supported by a specific, well-explained example or logical consequence, and avoid introducing new arguments in the final paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Conversely', 'Therefore', and 'To conclude' to signal transitions. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For instance, the transition between the introduction and the first body paragraph could be smoother. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'the second view' which refers to the single-sex argument, but the structure feels a bit repetitive. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph flows naturally into the next will enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'detrimental', 'conducive', and 'pivotal'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'co-educational has more significant impact' should be 'co-education has a more significant impact', and 'acknowledge more co-educational schools' is not a natural collocation. You also repeat 'students' and 'schools' frequently. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition, and ensure that your word forms (e.g., noun vs. adjective) are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the' opposite gender) and incorrect word forms ('co-educational' used as a noun instead of 'co-education'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'girls who did early education from single-sex schools'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement, article usage, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with grammatical precision.
