In many parts of the world girls and boys are educated together in co-educational or mixed schools. Some people think that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools. To what extent do you agree with this view?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience. Write at least 250 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is believed in many parts of the world that teaching girls separately from the boys will be more beneficial than teaching both genders together. I partially agree to this believe.

Although teaching these genders together has it advantage, I am of the believe that it does not outweighs the disadvantages. Firstly, teaching these genders together can serve as a distraction. As an individual grows their sexual senses grows also making their urges for the other partner to increase but if they were never in the same class they would not have to think about it. A friend of mine who had always have the best results in the class, everyone had always wanted to be like him but all of these results began to crumble when he started having sexual desires toward a girl in the class, a once believed prodigy could barely pay full attention in class.

However, these two parties can be of great help to each other. Some people get to understand things better when they are being taught by someone from the other gender who is also an age mate. There was a time I was struggling a lot in English Language and most of my teachers had already predicted me to fail in the external examination but through the help of the girl I was able prove my teachers wrong.

In contrast, in single sex schools the teacher can easily focus on students academic weakness because in some schools where the subject teacher is a male, he will be limited in his teaching with to a female student because he has to be careful so as to not touch her inappropriately and be charged with sexual assault and within all of this carefulness the teacher will not be able to teach the student properly. In addition, some teacher can take advantage of the opposite sex students in a co-educational school mostly the girl student.

In conclusion, I am partially in support with single sex education rather than co-educational education because of sexual reasons and distraction.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding 'sexual distractions' is repetitive and relies on anecdotal evidence rather than broader educational or social analysis. The point about teachers being limited in their interactions due to fear of accusations is a unique perspective, but it is somewhat underdeveloped and borders on a generalization. To reach a higher band, you should focus on more academic arguments, such as differences in learning styles or social development, rather than focusing heavily on potential misconduct or romantic distractions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the argument. There is a logical progression from the introduction to the body paragraphs and the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'In contrast' used to introduce a point about teacher-student dynamics rather than a direct contrast to the previous paragraph. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas more fluidly rather than relying on simple transitions.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'I am of the believe' (should be 'belief') and 'sexual senses grows' (should be 'sexual awareness grows'). The phrasing 'age mate' is also non-standard in this context. While you attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on basic descriptors. Focusing on more precise academic collocations would significantly improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('sexual senses grows', 'some teacher can take'), incorrect word forms ('I am of the believe'), and awkward phrasing ('predicted me to fail'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are run-on sentences and missing commas that make some parts harder to read. To improve, you should focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with correct grammatical markers.
