Student answer (Band 7.0)

Nowadays, girls and boys are educated together in many schools. However, some people believe that students can get more benefits if they study separately in single-sex schools. I partly agree with this view because separate schools can help students concentrate, but mixed schools also have important advantages.

One major benifit of single-sex schools is that students may be able to focus better in their studies. Sometimes, teenagers can become distracted by opposite gender, especially during their teenage years. In a single-sex environment, students may feel more comfortable and concentrate more on their lessons. For example, some students may feel nervous when asking questions or giving presentations in front of classmates of the same gender.

On the other hand, co-educational schools can prepare students better for real life. In workplaces and society, men and women usually have to work together. Studying together from a young age can help students communicate with each other, understand different opinions and develop teamwork skills. For instance, students who regularly participate in group activities with both boys and girls may become more confident when working with people of the opposite gender in their future careers.

In my opinion, the quality of education and the school environment are more important than whether a school is mixed or separate. A well-managed co-educattional school can provide a good learning environment while also teaching students how to communicate and cooperate with others. Therefore, i believe that both types of schools can be successful, but i would prefer co-educational schools because they provide students with useful social skills as well as academic knowledge.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that acknowledges both sides of the argument. The ideas are relevant and supported with logical reasoning, such as the focus on academic concentration for single-sex schools and social preparation for co-educational settings. The development is balanced, though it could be further enhanced by providing more specific, real-world examples beyond general statements. The conclusion effectively synthesises the arguments and reinforces the writer's stance. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'One major benefit', 'On the other hand', and 'Therefore' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. The referencing is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the structure of an IELTS essay. The flow of information is smooth, contributing to a coherent and well-structured response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is a sufficient range of topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'co-educational', 'concentrate', 'teamwork skills', and 'academic knowledge'. While the range is sufficient, it lacks the more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions that would elevate the score to a higher band. There are minor spelling errors, such as 'benifit' and 'co-educattional', but these do not impede communication. The word choice is generally accurate and appropriate for the formal tone of the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The grammar is generally accurate, with most sentences being error-free. There are occasional slips, such as the missing article in 'distracted by opposite gender' and the failure to capitalise the pronoun 'i'. However, these errors are infrequent and do not interfere with the reader's understanding. The punctuation is mostly correct, and the control over complex structures is sufficient to support the clear communication of ideas throughout the response.
