Student answer (Band 6.0)

In numerous parts around the globe, girls and boys are taught together in mixed or coeducational schools, but still, a number of individuals believe that there are numerous benefits to boys and girls by studying separately in single-sex schools. I partially agree with this statement.

Firstly, most children are immature and get distracted very easily, especially by the opposite gender; nevertheless, in the case of a single-gender school, students can focus entirely on their studies and will not lose their attention due to attraction with the opposite gender. Moreover, in gender-isolated schools, children can learn tasks according to their interests without any hesitation. For example, in one survey, it was found that 70% of male students in a survey of educational schools are keen to join cookery classes, but they hesitate to do so because of the opposite gender.

On the other hand, there are some issues that the rich children of single-sex schools have faced, and some of them are as follows: exposure to the opposite gender is very essential for the overall development of a child; however, in the case of gender-isolated schools, this aspect always lacks as children do not interact with their opposite gender, and this is the reason a number of students ought to face problems in their job or any other social gatherings.

To sum up, I would like to say that studying in a single-sex school is advantageous as students can focus on their studies without any distraction, but there are some cons also like in gender-isolated institutions, students didn't get exposure with the opposite sex.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both sides of the argument and providing a clear personal position. The ideas are relevant, such as the focus on academic concentration versus social development. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the example regarding cookery classes is a bit anecdotal and lacks depth. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your points with more detailed explanations or broader societal examples. The conclusion is a bit brief and simply restates the points rather than synthesising them effectively. Overall, the task is addressed, but the depth of argument could be improved.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'On the other hand' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. For example, the phrase 'in the case of' is used multiple times, which makes the flow less natural. Additionally, the referencing in the third paragraph is slightly unclear, as the phrase 'the rich children of single-sex schools' seems to be a misuse of the word 'rich' or an unnecessary addition that confuses the reader. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'co-educational', 'gender-isolated', and 'advantageous'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'rich children' when discussing single-sex schools, which does not fit the context. You also rely on some repetitive phrasing. While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the control is not always consistent. To improve, focus on using collocations more accurately and avoiding repetitive structures. Expanding your range of synonyms for common words like 'problems' or 'benefits' would also help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully use some complex sentences, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'students didn't get exposure with the opposite sex' (should be 'do not get exposure to') and 'a number of students ought to face problems' (where 'ought to' is used incorrectly). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are minor slips in sentence construction. The majority of your sentences are understandable, but the frequency of these small errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage.
