Student answer (Band 7.0)

In many countries, boys and girls study together in mixed schools, while some people believe that students would benefit more from being educated separately. Although single-sex education can provide certain advantages, I largely believe that co-educational schools are more beneficial for students.

One major advantage of single-sex schools is that students may experience fewer distractions during their studies. Teenagers can sometimes become more interested in social relationships than academic work, which may affect their concentration. In addition, teachers in single-sex schools can potentially use teaching methods that are more suitable for the needs of a particular gender. For example, some students may feel more confident participating in classroom discussions when they are not surrounded by students of the opposite sex.

However, I believe that co-educational schools provide more important benefits. First, studying with both genders helps young people develop better communication and social skills. Since men and women have to work together in universities and workplaces, interacting with the opposite gender from an early age can prepare students for their future professional lives. For instance, students who regularly participate in mixed group projects can learn how to communicate with and cooperate with different types of people.

Another important benefit is that co-education can promote equality between men and women. When boys and girls study together, they have opportunities to understand each other's abilities and perspectives. This can help reduce gender stereotypes and encourage mutual respect. In my experience, students in mixed educational environments often become more comfortable working with people of both genders.

In conclusion, although single-sex schools may reduce distractions and sometimes provide a more focused learning environment, I believe that co-educational schools are preferable because they develop social skills, prepare students for the workplace and promote greater gender equality.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The arguments are well-developed, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the debate—distractions and teaching methods for single-sex schools, and social skills and equality for co-educational schools. You have provided relevant examples, such as the mention of university and workplace preparation, which effectively support your main argument. The ideas are extended logically, and the conclusion provides a concise summary of your stance. The response is balanced and demonstrates a clear understanding of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth, using cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'However', and 'Another important benefit'. The use of referencing is accurate, and the paragraphing is used effectively to structure the argument. The flow of information is natural, and the reader can easily follow your line of reasoning from the introduction to the conclusion. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words, indicating a high level of control over the structure of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. You use topic-specific terms such as 'co-educational', 'gender stereotypes', and 'mutual respect' effectively. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and appropriate for the academic context, there is room to incorporate more sophisticated or less common lexical items to reach the highest band. For instance, instead of 'more important benefits', you could use 'more significant advantages'. The word choice is consistently natural, and there are no spelling or word-formation errors that impede communication. The vocabulary is well-suited to the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional clauses ('when they are not surrounded by...') and concessive clauses ('Although single-sex schools may...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is excellent. You demonstrate a high level of grammatical accuracy throughout the text. While the structures are correct and varied, incorporating a wider range of advanced grammatical forms, such as inversion or more complex passive constructions, could further enhance the sophistication of your writing. Overall, your grammar is strong and supports clear communication.
