Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, boys and girls usually study together in co-educational schools in many countries. However, some people believe that educating them separately in single-sex schools is more beneficial. I partially disagree with this opinion because mixed schools prepare students better for real life, although single sex schools may offer as few academic advantages.

One of the main reasons why some people Favor single-sex schools is that students are able to concentrate better on their studies. When boys and girls are educated separately, they are less likely to be distracted by social relationships or the desire to impress the opposite genders. As a result, they can devote more attention to classroom activities and academic tasks, which may improve their overall performance. In addition, many students feel more confident expressing their opinions and asking questions in a same-sex environment, practically during adolescence. For instance, girls in all- girls schools may participate more actively in science and mathematics classes because they feel less intimidated. Therefore, single sex education can create a more focused and supportive learning atmosphere.

However, I believe that co-educational schools are more beneficial because they prepare students for real life. Studying with the opposite gender helps children develop communication, teamwork, and mutual respects from an early age. These skills are essential in universities and workplaces, where men and women work together. For example, students who regularly complete group projects with both genders often adapt more easily to professional environment. Therefore, mixed schools provide both academic and social benefits.

In conclusion, although single-sex schools can improve students focus, I believe co-educational schools more beneficial because they prepare children for both academic success and real-life challenges.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position of partial disagreement. The arguments for both single-sex and co-educational schools are relevant and supported with logical examples, such as the mention of group projects and classroom dynamics. The ideas are well-developed, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the writer's stance. To reach a higher band, the student could further extend the analysis of the 'real-life' benefits of co-education by contrasting them more explicitly with the potential social limitations of single-sex environments, ensuring a more balanced and nuanced exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'In addition', 'For instance', and 'Therefore' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. While the structure is sound, the flow could be slightly more sophisticated by varying the transition markers and ensuring that the relationship between the two sides of the argument is more tightly integrated throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for clear communication. The student uses topic-specific terms like 'co-educational', 'single-sex', 'adolescence', and 'intimidated' appropriately. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'opposite genders' (should be 'opposite sex') and 'students focus' (missing possessive apostrophe). To improve, the student should aim to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider range, moving beyond standard academic vocabulary to more sophisticated expressions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear, and the grammar is generally accurate, though there are a few slips, such as 'as few academic advantages' (should be 'a few') and 'professional environment' (missing article 'a'). Punctuation is generally correct, though the use of 'all- girls' has an unnecessary space. The control of grammar is good, and errors do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the student should focus on eliminating these minor slips and increasing the variety of complex grammatical structures used.
