IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many parts of the world girls and boys are educated together in co-educational or mixed schools. Some people think that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools. To what extent do you agree with this view?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience. Write at least 250 words.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

In many parts of the world, boys and girls are educated together, while some argue that separating them into single-sex schools produces better educational outcomes. Although studying in a single-sex environment may offer certain academic and social advantages, I believe that co-educational schooling is ultimately more beneficial because it better prepares young people for life beyond the classroom.

There are several arguments in favour of single-sex education. One is that students may experience fewer distractions during a period of adolescence when social relationships can become particularly important. In a single-sex classroom, pupils may therefore be able to devote more attention to their studies rather than being preoccupied with impressing or interacting with members of the opposite sex. Furthermore, some educators argue that teaching can be adapted more closely to the learning preferences of boys or girls. A teacher who works exclusively with one gender, for instance, may be able to employ approaches that encourage greater participation among otherwise reluctant students.

Nevertheless, these potential advantages are outweighed by the broader benefits of co-education. Most importantly, mixed schools provide students with regular opportunities to communicate and collaborate with people of the opposite sex. This is highly relevant to adult life, since universities, workplaces and wider society are not divided along gender lines. Students who have learned from an early age to cooperate with both boys and girls may consequently be better equipped to communicate confidently, resolve disagreements and function effectively in diverse environments.

Co-educational schools can also contribute to greater gender equality. When boys and girls study together, they are exposed to one another's abilities and achievements on a daily basis, which can challenge simplistic assumptions about what each gender is capable of. For example, a girl who excels in physics or a boy who performs exceptionally well in languages can challenge stereotypes that might otherwise go unquestioned. More importantly, students learn to judge their peers on the basis of individual qualities rather than gender. Although mixed classrooms can occasionally create distractions, this is largely a matter of classroom management rather than a fundamental flaw in the educational model.

In conclusion, while single-sex schools may provide a more focused environment for some students and may allow teachers to adopt gender-specific approaches, I do not believe that these benefits justify separating boys and girls. The social skills, mutual understanding and preparation for real-world interaction offered by co-educational schools make them, in my view, the more effective form of education overall.
