Student answer (Band 7.5)

In many parts of the world, boys and girls study together in co-educational schools, while some people believe that students can benefit more from studying in single-sex schools. Although separate schools may offer some advantages, I largely disagree with this view because mixed schools help students develop important social skills and prepare them for real-life situations.

There are some benefits to educating boys and girls separately. Firstly, students may face fewer distractions because they do not have to worry about the presence of the opposite sex. As a result, they may be able to concentrate more effectively on their studies. Secondly, some students may feel more comfortable expressing their opinions in a single-sex classroom. For example, a shy student might be more willing to answer questions or participate in discussions when they feel less self-conscious.

However, I believe that co-educational schools provide greater benefits. One important advantage is that students learn how to communicate and cooperate with people of different genders. These skills are essential because universities and workplaces usually consist of both men and women. By studying together from a young age, students can learn to respect different opinions and work effectively as a team.

Another significant benefit is that mixed schools can reduce gender stereotypes. When students regularly interact with each other, they are more likely to understand that academic subjects and careers are not limited to a particular gender. This can encourage young people to choose subjects according to their interests and abilities rather than traditional expectations. For instance, when boys and girls complete group projects together, they have opportunities to develop leadership and problem-solving skills.

In conclusion, although single-sex schools can provide a more focused learning environment for some students, I believe that co-educational schools are more beneficial overall. They not only provide academic education but also develop communication, teamwork and social skills that are valuable throughout students' future lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The arguments are well-developed, with the first body paragraph acknowledging the opposing view regarding focus and comfort, while the subsequent paragraphs provide strong, logical support for the benefits of co-education, such as social skill development and the reduction of gender stereotypes. Each point is supported by relevant explanations and examples, demonstrating a clear and consistent line of reasoning that satisfies the requirements for a high band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the counter-argument and your own position is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Although', 'Firstly', 'However', and 'For instance', which help guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is appropriate, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs focusing on distinct points, and a concise conclusion. The flow of information is natural and professional throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic essay. Phrases like 'gender stereotypes', 'traditional expectations', and 'focused learning environment' show a solid command of topic-specific language. While the vocabulary is accurate and conveys your meaning clearly, it remains somewhat standard. To reach the highest bands, you could incorporate more sophisticated, less common lexical items or idiomatic collocations. However, the current range is sufficient to express your ideas with precision and flexibility, and there are no errors in word choice that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses ('Although separate schools may offer some advantages, I largely disagree...') and conditional-like structures. The grammar is highly accurate, with the majority of sentences being error-free. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there is a high level of control over tense and subject-verb agreement. The writing is fluent and demonstrates a strong grasp of English syntax, which allows for clear and sophisticated communication of your ideas.
