IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many parts of the world girls and boys are educated together in co-educational or mixed schools. Some people think that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools. To what extent do you agree with this view?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience. Write at least 250 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

While some advocate students get benefit from single-sex schools, I completely disagree with this assertion, because co-education can prevent social isolation and optimize the economic resource allocation.

First and foremost, there are several reasons why I hold this view. One possible reason is single-sex schools force adults towards social isolation. Modern workforce needs seamless collaboration, and good communication skills. SIngle-sex schools are unable to provide the ability to adapt. In this modern era, employers require the leadership skill, ability of critical thinking, and the mentality to work in a team. Consequently, teamwork is essential, but lack of adaptibility, and social connectivity may leads to early corporate burnout. For example, some modest countries force their female students in single-sex institutes. As a result, they find it hard to co-operate with their male colleagues in their workplace.

Furthermore, single-sex classrooms create massive infrastructural strain for a nation. Policy makers need to build separate classrooms for both boys and girls, while it can be possible in a single classroom by promoting co-education. Moreover, this concept puts a massive financial burden on the government. However, instead of funding two separate schools, educational authorities can use it for infrastructural development, public transportation, scientific labs and others. For instance, by merging them into a co-education environment, the government can enhance the lab facilities, games field, modern equipment, robotics and other. In addition, government can make education affordable for everyone using this fund.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that single-sex school creates deviation, wastes public funds, leads to immense infrastructural insufficiency, and a long term detrimental effects to the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have clearly stated your position against single-sex education and maintained it throughout the essay. You addressed the prompt by providing two main arguments: the development of social/workplace skills and the economic efficiency of co-educational institutions. While your ideas are relevant, they could be further developed with more nuanced examples. For instance, the mention of 'modest countries' is vague and does not effectively support your argument. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting examples are specific and directly linked to the core argument. Overall, you have addressed all parts of the task with a clear, consistent viewpoint.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use transition signals such as 'First and foremost', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, some cohesive devices are used mechanically or slightly inaccurately, such as 'while it can be possible' in the second paragraph, which creates a slightly awkward connection. Additionally, some referencing is a bit repetitive. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that the logical flow between sentences is smoother and less formulaic.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including terms like 'economic resource allocation', 'corporate burnout', and 'infrastructural strain'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'single-sex schools force adults towards social isolation' (where 'force' is slightly unnatural) and 'creates deviation' (which is unclear in this context). There are also minor errors in word form, such as 'adaptibility' (spelled incorrectly as 'adaptibility' instead of 'adaptability'). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring correct spelling of academic vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'lack of adaptibility... may leads to' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'some modest countries force their female students in single-sex institutes' (preposition error). Additionally, there are minor punctuation issues and missing articles in places. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and consistent use of articles.
