Student answer (Band 6.5)

Many people believe that girls and boys should be studying together in co-educational schools as it fosters holistic development of children. While others hold the view that both genders should study in different schools because this would lower distractions and affairs. I completely agree with the former view .

On the one hand, many individuals favour the education of boys and girls be done in mixed schools. They believe that it would lead to overall development of children. When both genders study together, they can learn about each others' behaviours, skills, interests and mindsets. They can participate as a team during various school activities such as group projects, assignments and debates. This leads to the development of mutual understanding and co-operation between them. Moreover, these qualities can help them in their future employments and workplaces. For example, many corporations have a mixed culture in which there are males as well as females workers. The co-operation and team-working skills are necessary among the employees to ensure company's profitability and sustainability in the long run.

On the other hand, there are some people who demand separate educational institutions for male and female students. Such individuals hold the view that it leads to fewer distractions towards opposite gender during studies. For example, many school students get involved in an affair with the opposite gender at a young age. This negatively impacts their academics and future career growth. If genders are separately taught, then there are chances that they could focus more on their studies and excel in their future careers.

In conclusion, studying in co-educational schools is greatly beneficial for the students as it helps them to develop a new perspective about other gender. In contrast, single-gender schools often focus on reducing the chances of affairs. However, in my view, co-educational schools can help children's holistic development by teaching them necessary skills.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, particularly the argument regarding the professional benefits of co-education. While the counter-argument regarding 'distractions' is presented, it is slightly less developed than the main argument. The essay provides a clear, consistent viewpoint, meeting the requirements for a Band 7. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more nuanced examples or explore the counter-argument with greater depth to demonstrate a more sophisticated understanding of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Moreover', and 'In contrast' are used appropriately to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more varied. For instance, the repetition of 'they' and 'these' is functional but could be improved with more sophisticated cohesive ties to enhance the flow between sentences. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for some precision. The student uses relevant topic-specific language such as 'holistic development', 'mutual understanding', and 'sustainability'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'future employments' (should be 'future employment' or 'career paths') and 'distractions towards opposite gender' (should be 'distractions involving the opposite gender'). While the range is adequate, it lacks the more sophisticated, idiomatic, or less common lexical items that would characterize a higher band score. The vocabulary is generally accurate and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and the meaning is always clear. However, there are some persistent errors, such as 'the education of boys and girls be done' (should be 'should be done') and 'company's profitability' (missing article 'the'). Additionally, the phrase 'distractions towards opposite gender' is grammatically awkward. While the student attempts complex structures, the control is not consistent enough for a higher band. The errors present are minor and do not interfere with the reader's understanding of the arguments.
