Student answer (Band 6.0)

In several countries on the globe, girls and boys attend mixed schools together. Few individual believe that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in one-sex school. In my opinion, one- sex school is more beneficial to the individuals rather than studying in a mixed school.

On the one hand, single-sex school has so much benefits in both academic and in life style. Students in a one-sex school tends to have maximum concentration in class and during their studies. The opposite sex can be a form of distraction to each other when in the same space, the boys might be trying to impress the girls and in doing so will be distracted from his studies. Furthermore, there are freedom of expression amongst the same sex in a single-sex school. Individuals tends to be free and open to express their self when with the same gender, but will feel shy and boxed up at the present of an opposite gender. Finally, self discipline is encouraged in a single-sex school, as its only made up of same gender every one will be working hard to reach a good level of self discipline and develop a more appealing personality.

On the other hand, schooling in a mixed school can impact both genders positively in the aspect of learning how to interact with an opposite gender. Students feels shy at the sight of the opposite gender but being in the same space can make one to master how to respectfully interact with the opposite gender.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you provide reasons for single-sex education, such as 'concentration' and 'freedom of expression', these points are not fully extended with specific examples or deeper analysis. The counter-argument regarding mixed schools is introduced but remains underdeveloped, lacking a strong concluding synthesis or a clear final stance. To improve, ensure each body paragraph provides a concrete example or a more detailed explanation to support your claims, and ensure your conclusion effectively summarizes your position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' to link your points. However, the transition between the two sides of the argument is abrupt, and the conclusion is missing entirely, which affects the overall flow. Additionally, some referencing is slightly mechanical. To achieve a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph flows naturally into the next, ending with a strong, cohesive conclusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on basic phrasing such as 'so much benefits' (which is grammatically incorrect) and 'good level'. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'one-sex school' instead of the more standard 'single-sex school'. To improve, try to incorporate more academic vocabulary and precise collocations. For example, instead of 'so much benefits', use 'significant advantages', and replace 'boxed up' with more formal alternatives like 'inhibited' or 'self-conscious'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('Students... tends to', 'Individuals tends to'), incorrect article usage ('at the present of'), and awkward phrasing ('its only made up of'). While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that plural/singular forms are used correctly throughout your writing.
