In many parts of the world girls and boys are educated together in co-educational or mixed schools. Some people think that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools. To what extent do you agree with this view?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience. Write at least 250 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In many countries, boys and girls study together in the same schools. However, some people believe that students should be educated separately. I partly agree with this view because single-sex schools can help students concentrate, but co-educational schools also have some important benefits.
On the one hand, studying in single-sex schools can help students focus on their studies. Boys and girls may sometimes be distracted by each other, especially during their teenage years. In a separate school, students may feel more comfortable and can pay more attention to their teachers. Also, teachers can use different methods according to the needs of boys or girls. For example, some students may participate more actively in class when they are not worried about what students of the opposite sex think about them.
On the other hand, co-educational schools also provide many benefits. Boys and girls need to learn how to communicate and work with each other because they will meet people of both genders in their future jobs and social lives. Studying together can also teach students to respect each other and understand different opinions. For example, students can work together on group projects and learn how to cooperate with one another.
In conclusion, I believe that both types of schools have advantages. Although single-sex schools may help students concentrate better, co-educational schools prepare young people for real life. Therefore, I believe that studying together is generally more beneficial for students.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both sides of the argument and providing a clear personal opinion. However, the essay falls short of the 250-word minimum requirement, which limits the depth of development. While the ideas are relevant, they are somewhat brief and could benefit from more detailed examples or further explanation to fully explore the implications of single-sex versus co-educational systems. Because the length requirement is not met, the development of ideas is restricted, preventing the essay from reaching a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is well-structured with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The progression of ideas is logical, moving from the benefits of single-sex education to the advantages of co-education. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Therefore' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. The flow is smooth, and the relationship between sentences is clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. The student uses topic-specific terms like 'co-educational', 'single-sex schools', and 'genders' correctly. However, the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and lacks the more sophisticated or academic collocations that would demonstrate a wider lexical resource. There are no significant errors in word choice, but the language remains relatively simple and functional rather than precise or varied.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a good level of grammatical control. There is a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Although single-sex schools may help students concentrate better, co-educational schools prepare young people for real life.' The sentences are generally error-free, and punctuation is used correctly. While the range of structures is not particularly wide or complex, the accuracy is high, and there are no errors that impede communication.
