IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In many parts of the world girls and boys are educated together in co-educational or mixed schools. Some people think that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools. To what extent do you agree with this view?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience. Write at least 250 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Gender mixed schools have become relatively more prevalent in the recent decades though critics argue that teaching them in segregation would be more advantageous for the students. I firmly disagree with them as co-educational institutes can teach pupils about respecting the opposite gender and the social norms.

Critics of the gender-mixed institutes contend that boys and girls should not be allowed to intermix at a young age as they might not possess the mental ability to comprehend the social behaviour of the opposite gender. Moreover, some educational topics related to both the genders can be challenging to discuss in co-sex classrooms and alot of shy students may not feel comfortable learning in such environment. Hence, single-sex schools provide better opportunity for both boys and girls to be taught such controversial topics without any hesitation of being judged by the opposite gender.

However, co-educational schools can equip students with better interaction and social skills. They not only learn to respect eachother but also the social boundaries surrounding opposite gender. This not only leads to a good upbringing but also creates social cohesion between the two genders, creating peace and unity among societies. Furthermore, research indicates that children are more productive when they are allowed to sit in the co-sex classrooms making them more focused on their academic progress.

To conclude, while segregated schools provide a more choosable option for introverted students and people holding to societal norms, gemder mixed schools are better for childrens' character and moral development.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the essay is slightly under the 250-word minimum, which impacts the depth of development. While the arguments regarding social skills and academic productivity are relevant, they could be further extended with more specific examples or evidence to reach a higher band. The conclusion is a bit abrupt, and the failure to meet the minimum length requirement necessitates a penalty in this criterion, as the development of ideas is curtailed by the word count.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover,' 'However,' and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to transition between ideas. Paragraphing is appropriate, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the argument. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, though the connection between the final sentence of the second paragraph and the rest of the text could be more seamless. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task, with some good collocations like 'social cohesion,' 'academic progress,' and 'moral development.' There are a few minor errors, such as 'co-sex' (which is not standard usage) and 'gemder' (a typo). While the range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision of less common lexical items that would characterize a higher band. The word choice is functional but rarely sophisticated.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'alot' (should be 'a lot'), 'eachother' (should be 'each other'), and 'childrens'' (should be 'children's'). Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage and pluralization. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication. The control of grammar is generally good, but more consistent accuracy in basic mechanics is needed for a higher score.
