In many parts of the world girls and boys are educated together in co-educational or mixed schools. Some people think that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools. To what extent do you agree with this view?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience. Write at least 250 words.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

In many countries, boys and girls attend the same schools, while some people believe that separating them can provide greater educational benefits. Although single-sex education may have some advantages, I believe that co-educational schools are generally more beneficial because they prepare students for real-life situations and encourage better social development.

One important advantage of single-sex schools is that students may experience fewer distractions. During adolescence, boys and girls can sometimes become more concerned about their appearance or relationships than their studies. In a single-sex environment, students may therefore be able to concentrate more effectively on academic work. Furthermore, teachers can sometimes adapt their teaching methods to the needs of one gender. For example, some students may feel more confident participating in class discussions when they are not worried about being judged by students of the opposite sex.

However, I believe that the benefits of co-education are more significant. First, studying alongside members of the opposite sex helps children develop important communication and social skills. In adult life, people regularly have to work with colleagues of different genders, so learning to cooperate with them from an early age can be extremely valuable. For instance, students who regularly participate in mixed-gender group projects can become more comfortable expressing their opinions and resolving disagreements with others.

Another advantage is that co-educational schools can promote equality and mutual respect. When boys and girls learn together, they have more opportunities to challenge stereotypes about what men and women can or cannot do. A girl who sees boys succeeding in subjects such as science, while also seeing girls performing equally well, may develop a more balanced understanding of gender and ability. This can be particularly important in preparing young people for modern workplaces.

In conclusion, although single-sex schools may reduce distractions and potentially improve concentration for some students, I believe that co-educational education is preferable overall. The opportunity to develop social skills, cooperate with both genders and develop mutual respect makes mixed schools better preparation for adult life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The arguments are well-developed, with specific points regarding social development, communication skills, and the challenging of gender stereotypes. Each paragraph is logically supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of group projects and workplace preparation. The ideas are extended sufficiently to provide a comprehensive answer to the question, demonstrating a clear understanding of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the counter-argument and your own position is smooth. You make effective use of cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'However', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion' to link sentences and paragraphs. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is natural, making the essay easy to follow. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive linking, and the structure supports the overall argument well.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic essay. Phrases like 'real-life situations', 'social development', 'adapt their teaching methods', and 'challenge stereotypes' are used accurately. The vocabulary is precise and contributes to the clarity of your arguments. While the range is sufficient and effective, it could be pushed further toward a more sophisticated level to reach the highest band, perhaps by incorporating more nuanced collocations or academic idioms. Nevertheless, the language used is natural and error-free.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The essay displays a high level of grammatical control. You use a variety of complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses ('If...'), relative clauses, and subordinating conjunctions ('Although...', 'When...'), with very high accuracy. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and there are no significant grammatical slips that impede communication. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent, reflecting a strong command of English grammar suitable for this level.
