Student answer (Band 6.0)

In contemporary society, girls and boys study together in mixed schools. While some people think that both sex benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools because it promotes their personal growth, I largely disagree with this view because it leads to irresponsible sexual behavior and poor relationship among them.

Co-educational schools promote students personal growth which is a significant factor in their future life. This is because they learn to work together as a group without considering the opposite gender. For instance, when having a group discussion, they can participate equally thus making both sexes feel free and able to compete favorably outside the classroom environment.

On the other hand, separating them can lead to poor relationship. Essentially, most girls who schooled in girls schools throughout their life may not feel free to interact with boys because they are not used to or they have never socialized with them particularly those girls who did not have an opportunity to have brothers at home. For example, when girls from a single-sex schools go for a competition, they tend to isolate themselves with the rest students.

Furthermore, children who are sexually active can develop irresponsible sexual behavior such as homosexuality in single-sex schools. This is because, they cannot withstand their feelings for the time they are in school. For example, it is hard to monitor the behavior of learners in schools where students share beds. consequently, it leads to irresponsible sexual misconduct.

To conclude, although some people think that single-sex schools help children by promoting their personal growth, other concerns including irresponsible sexual behavior and poor relationships need to be considered. Therefore, educating them in mixed schools is the best approach.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding 'irresponsible sexual behavior' is quite speculative and lacks a logical foundation, which weakens the overall persuasiveness of the essay. While the prompt is addressed, the supporting points—particularly the claim that single-sex schools lead to homosexuality—are not well-reasoned or supported by objective evidence, bordering on over-generalization. To reach a higher band, the arguments should be more balanced and grounded in sociological or educational realities rather than unsubstantiated claims.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel forced. For instance, the link between 'single-sex schools' and 'homosexuality' is abrupt and lacks a smooth logical progression. Referencing is generally clear, but the essay would benefit from a more sophisticated use of cohesive devices to connect ideas more fluidly rather than relying on simple signposting.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'contemporary society' and 'favorably', but the range is somewhat limited. There are also instances of awkward word choice, such as 'poor relationship among them' (should be 'poor relationships between them') and 'isolate themselves with the rest students' (should be 'isolate themselves from the other students'). The repetition of basic terms like 'girls and boys' and 'schools' suggests a need for more varied synonyms to demonstrate a wider lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Examples include 'both sex benefit' (should be 'both sexes benefit'), 'most girls who schooled in girls schools' (should be 'most girls who attended girls' schools'), and 'consequently, it leads to' (punctuation error). The control of articles and pluralization is inconsistent. While the writer attempts complex sentences, the frequency of these minor errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band for grammatical accuracy.
