Student answer (Band 6.0)
In contemporary society, girls and boys study together in mixed schools. While some people think that both sex benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools because it promotes their personal growth, I largely disagree with this view because it leads to irresponsible sexual behavior and poor relationships among them.
Co-educational schools promote students' personal growth which is a significant factor in their future life. This is because they learn to work together as a group without considering the opposite gender. For instance, when having a group discussion, they can participate equally thus making both sexes feel free and able to compete favorably outside the classroom environment.
On the other hand, separating them can lead to poor relationships. Essentially, most girls who are schooled in girls schools throughout their life may not feel free to interact with boys because they are not used to or they have never socialized with them particularly those girls who did not have an opportunity to have brothers at home. For example, when girls from single-sex schools go for a competition, they tend to isolate themselves with the rest of the students.
Furthermore, children who are sexually active can develop irresponsible sexual behavior such as homosexuality in single-sex schools. This is because they cannot withstand their feelings for the time they are in school. For example, it is hard to monitor the behavior of learners in schools where students share beds. Consequently, it leads to irresponsible sexual misconduct.
To conclude, although some people think that single-sex schools help children by promoting their personal growth, other concerns including irresponsible sexual behavior and poor relationships need to be considered. Therefore, educating them in mixed schools is the best approach.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding 'irresponsible sexual behavior' is quite speculative and lacks a balanced or nuanced perspective, which limits the depth of the response. While the student provides reasons for their stance, the supporting examples—such as the claim that students in single-sex schools cannot withstand their feelings—are somewhat simplistic and rely on generalizations. To reach a higher band, the student should provide more sophisticated reasoning and avoid making sweeping, potentially controversial claims that are not well-supported by evidence or logical analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the other hand,' 'Furthermore,' and 'To conclude,' which help guide the reader through the argument. However, the progression of ideas is occasionally mechanical. For instance, the transition between the discussion of social skills and the jump to sexual behavior is abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the use of 'them' in the introduction, which could refer to either the students or the schools. Overall, the logical flow is sufficient, but the use of cohesive devices could be more varied and natural to improve the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their meaning clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'co-educational,' 'socialized,' and 'misconduct.' However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'both sex benefit' (should be 'both sexes') and 'isolate themselves with the rest' (should be 'from'). The student relies on fairly common vocabulary, and there is a lack of more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions that would demonstrate a wider lexical range. Improving precision and collocation would help elevate the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'both sex benefit' instead of 'both sexes benefit,' and 'schooled in girls schools' which is slightly awkward phrasing. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors in article usage and pluralization. The student demonstrates an ability to construct complex sentences, but these often contain small errors that, while not impeding communication, prevent the writing from being considered highly accurate. A greater focus on subject-verb agreement and prepositional usage would be beneficial.
