Student answer (Band 6.0)

In contemporary society, girls' and boys study together in mixed schools. While some people think that both sex benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools because it promotes their personal growth, I largely disagree with this view because it leads to irresponsible sexual behavior and poor relationships among them.

Co-educational schools promote students' personal growth which is a significant factor in their future life. This is because they learn to work together as a group without considering the opposite gender. For instance, when having a group discussion, they can participate equally thus making both sexes feel free and able to compete favorably outside the classroom environment.

On the other hand, separating them can lead to poor relationships. Essentially, most girls who are schooled in girls' schools throughout their life may not feel free to interact with boys because they are not used to or they have never socialized with them particularly those girls who did not have an opportunity to have brothers at home. For example, when girls from single-sex schools go for a competition, they tend to isolate themselves from the rest of the students.

Furthermore, children who are sexually active can develop irresponsible sexual behavior such as homosexuality in single-sex schools. This is because they cannot withstand their feelings for the time they are in school. For example, it is hard to monitor the behavior of learners in schools where students share beds. Consequently, it leads to irresponsible sexual misconduct.

To conclude, although some people think that single-sex schools help children by promoting their personal growth, other concerns including irresponsible sexual behavior and poor relationships need to be considered. Therefore, educating them in mixed schools is the most effective approach.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding 'irresponsible sexual behavior' is quite speculative and lacks a logical foundation, which weakens the overall persuasiveness of the essay. While the student provides examples, such as the mention of group discussions or the isolation of students from single-sex schools, these points could be more deeply explored to reach a higher band. The response covers all parts of the task, but the reasoning in the third paragraph is a significant over-generalization that detracts from the academic tone required for this task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the logical progression between the idea of 'poor relationships' and the subsequent paragraph about 'sexual behavior' is somewhat abrupt. Referencing is generally clear, though the flow could be improved by using more varied linking phrases to connect the supporting examples to the main arguments more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'contemporary society' and 'compete favorably'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'both sex' (should be 'both sexes') and 'schooled' (which is slightly informal in this context). The range is sufficient to communicate the message, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. The repetition of terms like 'personal growth' and 'irresponsible sexual behavior' suggests a limited range of synonyms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'girls' and boys study' (should be 'girls and boys'), 'both sex benefit' (should be 'both sexes benefit'), and 'throughout their life' (should be 'throughout their lives'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor slips throughout. The control of complex structures is inconsistent, and while the errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band score.
