Student answer (Band 6.0)

In contemporary society, girls and boys study together in mixed schools. While some people think that both sex benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools because it promotes their personal growth, I largely disagree with this view because it leads to irresponsible sexual behavior and poor relationships among them.

Co-educational schools promote students' personal growth which is a significant factor in their future life. This is because they learn to work together as a group without considering the opposite gender. For instance, when having a group discussion, they can participate equally thus making both sexes feel free and able to compete favorably outside the classroom environment.

On the other hand, separating them can lead to poor relationships. Essentially, most girls who are schooled in girls' schools throughout their life may not feel free to interact with boys because they are not used to or they have never socialized with them particularly those girls who did not have an opportunity to have brothers at home. For example, when girls from single-sex schools go for a competition, they tend to isolate themselves from the rest of the students.

Furthermore, children who are sexually active can develop irresponsible sexual behavior such as homosexuality in single-sex schools. This is because they cannot withstand their feelings for the time they are in school. For example, it is hard to monitor the behavior of learners in schools where students share beds. Consequently, it leads to irresponsible sexual misconduct.

To conclude, although some people think that single-sex schools help children by promoting their personal growth, I strongly disagree with them because it can cause irresponsible sexual behavior and poor relationships.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding 'irresponsible sexual behavior' is quite speculative and lacks a logical foundation, which weakens the overall persuasiveness of the essay. While the prompt asks for the extent of agreement, the supporting points rely on generalizations that are not well-supported by evidence or logical reasoning. To reach a higher band, you should focus on providing more balanced and academically sound arguments, such as discussing academic performance or social skill development, rather than making unsubstantiated claims about student behavior.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'For instance,' 'On the other hand,' and 'Furthermore' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the central topic of each paragraph is clear. To improve, try to vary the cohesive devices used and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid, rather than relying on standard transition markers at the start of every paragraph.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their opinion clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'contemporary society' and 'compete favorably.' However, there are instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'both sex' (should be 'both sexes') and 'irresponsible sexual misconduct,' which sounds slightly unnatural in this context. The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Focusing on collocations and more precise academic terminology would help elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'both sex benefit' (subject-verb agreement), 'schooled in girls' schools throughout their life' (plurality issues), and 'for the time they are in school' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally correct, but the sentence variety is limited. To improve, you should aim for more complex sentence structures with fewer errors. Ensure that you proofread for basic subject-verb agreement and pluralization, as these errors occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy of the writing.
