Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many parts of the globe, girls and boys are taught together in co-educational schools, and this is thought to be standard. However, some people opine that being educated separately in single-sex schools is more advantageous for children. Although there are arguments on both sides, I strongly disagree that studying in single-sex schools is more beneficial and present my views in the following paragraphs.

To commence, studying in a co-educational school prepares children for real-world interactions. There is no denying that being around the same kind of people, that too from the same gender, might restrict the area of your thinking and how people interact outside the school. Being in a mixed environment aids self-confidence and gives an idea about what people coming from different backgrounds think. A recent study has shown that people educated in co-educational schools are likely to outperform people educated in single-sex schools 80% of the time.

In addition, studying in a single-sex school may likely lead to gender stereotyping. Being around people from the same gender for most of your life without collaborative learning, people might develop unrealistic expectations or reinforce stereotypes about how the opposite gender behaves. This situation might lead to even more restrictive gender roles, which in turn can detriment and deteriorate the core value of equality. Growing up in a segregated environment can make it difficult to comprehend what actually is right.

To summarize, studying in a single-sex school results in reduced social skills, workplace challenges, and gender stereotyping. Therefore, it is always beneficial for a child to flourish in a mixed environment where they can learn to tackle real-world interactions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have provided relevant arguments regarding real-world preparation and gender stereotyping. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the claim that students in co-educational schools 'outperform' others by 80% lacks context or specific evidence, making it feel like an unsupported generalization. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting points are more thoroughly explained with concrete examples or logical reasoning rather than relying on vague statistics. Overall, the response is relevant and the position is consistent.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'To commence,' 'In addition,' and 'To summarize' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be more natural. For example, the sentence 'There is no denying that being around the same kind of people, that too from the same gender...' is slightly clunky in its phrasing. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and each paragraph has a clear central topic, which helps the reader follow your argument effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including phrases like 'gender stereotyping,' 'unrealistic expectations,' and 'segregated environment.' There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'detriment and deteriorate the core value of equality,' where 'detriment' is used incorrectly as a verb. While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, these occasional inaccuracies prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on using words in their correct grammatical form and ensuring collocations sound natural to a native speaker.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You show good control over basic grammar, and your meaning is always clear. There are some minor errors, such as 'that too from the same gender,' which is informal and grammatically awkward. Additionally, the phrase 'what actually is right' is a bit simplistic. While you use complex structures, they are not always perfectly accurate. To move up, aim for more variety in your complex sentence patterns and ensure that your punctuation and phrasing remain precise throughout the essay.
