Student answer (Band 6.5)

In many countries, boys and girls study together in the same schools. However, some people believe that students can get more benefits if they are educated in single-sex schools. I partly agree with this view because separate schools can have some advantages, but co-educational schools also provide important benefits.

Firstly, studying in single-sex schools may help students to concentrate better on their education. When boys and girls study together, some students may become distracted because of friendships or relationships. In a school where only one gender studies, students may focus more on their lessons and academic goals. For example, teenage students can sometimes spend a lot of time talking with their classmates instead of paying attention to teachers. Therefore, single-sex education can create a more focused learning environment.

Secondly, separate education can allow teachers to use different teaching methods according to the needs of boys or girls. Boys and girls may have different interests and learning styles, although this is not true for everyone. For instance, a teacher in a girls' school may encourage more female students to take subjects such as science and technology if these subjects are not popular among them. This could help students become more confident in their studies.

On the other hand, I believe that co-educational schools are also very useful. In real life, men and women need to work and communicate with each other. Therefore, studying together from a young age can help students develop communication skills and learn how to respect people of the opposite gender. It can also prepare them for university and future workplaces, where people usually work together regardless of gender.

In conclusion, I agree that single-sex schools can improve concentration and provide a suitable learning environment for some students. However, I believe that co-educational schools are more beneficial overall because they prepare young people for real-life situations and help them develop social skills.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, maintaining a clear position throughout. You present a balanced view, acknowledging the benefits of single-sex education while ultimately arguing for the superiority of co-educational systems. The ideas are relevant and supported with logical explanations, such as the focus on academic concentration versus the development of real-world social skills. To reach a higher band, you could further extend your arguments by providing more specific examples or deeper analysis of the long-term implications of each educational model, rather than relying on general statements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use a range of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. The referencing is generally clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate. The flow between sentences is smooth, though the use of cohesive devices is somewhat standard. To improve, you could experiment with more sophisticated linking phrases to enhance the overall sophistication of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'academic goals', 'learning styles', and 'real-life situations' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it is somewhat repetitive and lacks a wide range of less common or idiomatic expressions. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repeating basic words like 'study' or 'benefits' multiple times throughout the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay displays a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is generally accurate. You successfully use conditional structures and complex clauses, such as 'if these subjects are not popular among them'. While there are no major errors that impede communication, the range of complex structures is somewhat limited. To reach a higher band, aim to incorporate a wider variety of advanced grammatical forms, such as passive voice or inversion, to demonstrate greater flexibility.
