Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that boys and girls are educated together in mixed schools in many parts of the world. Although some people think that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools, I completely disagree with this view because co-educational schools promote gender equality and understanding among learners.

The primary reason why I disagree with this statement is that mixed schools give learners equal access to education, which has a significant impact on their future. This is largely because both boys and girls learn in the same classroom, and are thought by the same teachers. For example, students in a mixed school thought by the same teachers compete favorably which makes them feel equal.

Another significant reason is that it promotes understanding among the learners. While it is true that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools, I would argue that mixed schools allow both sexes to interact through group discussions. This is particularly important because they exchange ideas among themselves meaning that they will build mutual respect. For instance, when a teachers gives a discussion question to a group of boys and girls, they will try to solve together by discussing, thereby promoting understanding among them.

To conclude, although educating learners in a single-sex school has merits, I firmly believe that educating them in co-education school is a better approach because it promotes equality and understanding among the learners which is a significant factor in their future life or work environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The ideas are relevant, focusing on gender equality and social interaction. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding 'competing favorably' is vague and lacks a concrete explanation of how this specifically benefits students. While the position is clear, the essay would benefit from more depth in the supporting examples to reach a higher band. The structure is logical, but the content feels slightly repetitive, particularly in the conclusion, which restates the introduction without adding new insight.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'The primary reason,' 'Another significant reason,' and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader. However, the use of these devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved to sound more natural. The progression of ideas is logical, but the transition between the benefits of single-sex schools and the counter-argument could be smoother to enhance the overall coherence of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and sophistication. There are some noticeable errors in word choice, such as 'thought by the same teachers' (should be 'taught') and 'compete favorably' (which is slightly awkward in this context). The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message, but it does not demonstrate the flexibility or precision required for higher bands. To improve, you should focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing like 'learners' and 'understanding among them'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'students... thought by the same teachers' is a recurring error in verb form. There are also minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring subject-verb agreement and correct verb forms will help improve your accuracy.
