Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is often argued that boys and girls are educated together in mixed schools in many parts of the world. Although some people think that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools, I completely disagree with this view because co-educational schools promote gender equality and understanding among learners.

The primary reason why I disagree with this statement is that mixed schools give learners equal access to education, which has a significant impact on their future. This is largely because both boys and girls learn in the same classroom and are taught by the same teachers. For example, students in a mixed school who are taught by the same teachers compete fairly, which makes them feel equal.

Another significant reason is that it promotes understanding among learners. While it is true that girls and boys benefit from being educated separately in single-sex schools, I would argue that mixed schools allow both sexes to interact through group discussions. This is particularly important because they exchange ideas among themselves, meaning that they will build mutual respect. For instance, when a teacher gives a discussion question to a group of boys and girls, they will try to solve it together by discussing it, thereby promoting understanding among them.

To conclude, although educating learners in a single-sex school has merits, I firmly believe that educating them in a co-educational school is a better approach because it promotes equality and understanding among learners, which are significant factors in their future lives and work environments.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding gender equality and social interaction are relevant and logically developed. However, the development is somewhat repetitive; for instance, the points about 'same teachers' and 'same classroom' are mentioned in both body paragraphs without significant expansion. To reach a higher band, the ideas could be extended with more specific real-world examples or deeper analysis of the long-term societal impacts of these educational models. The conclusion effectively reinforces the initial stance, ensuring the response is well-focused on the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'The primary reason', 'Another significant reason', and 'To conclude' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some of the transitions between sentences feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is clear, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text, meeting the requirements for a coherent response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There is some use of topic-specific vocabulary such as 'co-educational', 'gender equality', and 'mutual respect'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrases like 'significant impact' and 'better approach'. To achieve a higher score, the student should aim to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary, as the current level is functional but lacks variety and precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and errors are rare and do not impede communication. For example, the use of conditional and relative clauses is generally correct. However, the range of complex structures is somewhat limited, and the writing style is relatively straightforward. To improve, the student should experiment with a wider variety of grammatical structures, such as passive voice or more advanced subordinating conjunctions, to add depth and complexity to their writing while maintaining the current level of accuracy.
